I apologise that Part Two of Jainsparrow's post never made the list. I have no idea why. In my thrid attempt, I cut it in half and only the second half showed up! There must be some weird artifact in the original file that freaks out the list server. In order not to burden the list any further, please email me off list and I will forward the complete Part Two to you individually. It is pretty much the BEST PART. From: Donne11y 95-08-24 02:38:00 EDT I cannot pretend to know Mary Lou, nor can I assess her right to be famous, but I do know what I feel when I listen to her and watch her play live. I don't mean to trivialize what is, to her, undoubtedly a very personal experience, but these are my feelings. Watching Mary Lou perform is like coming into a party where you know nobody, and feeling by the time you leave that you genuinely belong. I can remember the first time I got off the red line and heard her earnestly interpreting Dylan's Eternal Circle for the benefit of a few skaters and a bunch of passing harvard preps. I stopped that day, and many others, and listened for hours; not because she was playing the most popular songs, not because it was a hip thing to do, but because she was literally celebrating music, and without saying a word, was inviting everyone within the sound of her tiny amplifier to share the moment with her. So what does it matter that she tours the country and has her own MMC folder? Maybe she IS in every other issue of Spin (or Sassy, for that matter.) I hope she does very well, as I know she deserves... I recently saw Alex Chilton play an R&B/Soul review show in Boston, and it was at once extremely disheartening and ultimately liberating to see the mix of bitterness and nostalgia on his face when somebody in the front shouted 'September Gurls.' I hope that Mary Lou never needs to be bitter over a world that didn't appreciate her when it should have, but whether she becomes a superstar or goes back to playing for subway tokens, her real fans will always be there, celebrating with her. And you're invited... ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V7 #117 **********************************
