Technically I have been a member for almost 10 years, but for the past 7 I have been accessing my mail through aol.com so I've been missing out on all the changes. Man, I barely recognized the place! I searched for a Mary Lou message folder, but it was long gone. I did find one for Courtney Love, but it had posts with names like "Drugs and Alcohol" and "What a Skank!" Far from the glory days of Anok and Brainwiz! Don't know what my point is exactly, except that at the time those message boards felt so futuristic and high-tech, and it was so exciting when Mary Lou responded to Instant Mail in real time... but compared to now, that era seems so quaint and basic. I remember David Crosby posting after one of the aol "upgrades": "Leave it to aol to fuck up a good thing!" I also have been able to access my archival floppy discs with a lot of the original ML folder posts, including CMLC vs. MLL flame wars... most of it is too mean-spirited to resurrect, but eventually I might find something fun to share. IMHO... *********the TEN BEST songs********** by ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^mary lou lord^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 1. SOME JINGLE JANGLE MORNING (WHEN I'M STRAIGHT) K.R.S. 7" The best. Has it all: fuzz guitar, manic energy, heartbreaking lyrics, gorgeous harmonies. 2. (Tie) ANDALUCIA/ST. SWITHEN'S DAY "Real" Deep Music Cassette Both exquisite, full of longing. Immortal moments: haunting "I Love You" refrain in Andalucia; 'When I maked love to your memory/it's not the same' from St. Swithen's Day 3. THE BRIDGE - "Mary Lou Lord" K.R.S. CD 'Whatever you do, Baby/Don't burn down the bridge' One devastating couplet after another. Bittersweet, yet ultimately life-affirming 4. DIAMOND - " 'When the tape runs out/the music keeps playing' It certainly does for me! World weary sidelong glance at a guy who 'swears by all the saints' that, given one more chance, he'd be a Diamond. Right. 5. THIRTEEN - Real Evocative, intimate version of BIG STAR's song. 'Won't you tell your Dad/Get off my back!' MLL meets the perfect song for her voice AND skillfully transcribes a complex arrangement to solo acoustic guitar. 6. HELSINKI - CD If only you coulda kept her company in that airport terminal playing RISK or UNO or something. Cool 90's touch with 'The FAX machine here is out of order.' 7. LONDON BRIDGE - Real 'Won't you take me by the hand/Help me understand this land' - well, there aren't many TV stations, and they have a different Dennis The Menace than we do... and watch out for the food! 8. SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE - CD 'Speed Racer' for schizophrenics. Achingly beautiful. Could be ridiculous but isn't. MLL's sincerity pulls it off. 9. CAMDEN TOWN RAIN - K.R.S. Sampler CD Lyrically, MLL's most obvious and uncensored work (not counting her recent posts, of course!). Wins points for lo-tech cassette sound, spoken intro, and redeeming chorus: "She's got your smile in her locket/as she's walking through the Camden Town Rain'. Loses points for 'She's pretty on the inside/She's pretty on the outside..." Why not just name names? Still, quite effective. 10. WESTERN UNION DESPERATE - acoustic vers. - K.R.S. 7" The rock version buries the vocals, but this unadorned acoustic take shines brightly. Striking guitar dynamics - from barely there to FULL ON. Extra lyrics too. 'When I need a friend/ It's still you.' How can you not believe her? This list subject to change at any time... She was exceptionally sweet & also mentioned that she'd been hanging out with Elliott Smith the night before. When I told her I was nervous about going to nicotine-hell Spaceland to see Elliott in my not-quite-recovered state, she told me he was playing at 7:30 this very evening at No Music on Santa Monica and La Brea. Perfect, I thought - a record store was bound to be much more intimate. First problem: the crosstreets"Santa Monica and La Brea" cover a rather WIDE area that includes strip malls, McDonalds, nightclubs, movie sets, and a cement-mixing site... and when I first parked there, No Music was nowhere to be found. Undaunted, I tried every alternate route I could think of and eventually struck paydirt right across the street from the famous Formosa cafe and Warner Brothers' Hollywood studios (where I once met Danny Elfman, but that's a different story). Finding the place became very easy as I simply followed all the Elliott and Mary Lou lookalikes down the street. No Music looks like a great indie music store but its layout wasn't real conducive to the rather LARGE crowd packed inside. No smoking, but lots of body heat and incense. I bought a Tiki punch for a donation to AIDS research. I couldn't see the singer at first, so I assumed it was Elliott... however, I didn't recognize any of the songs, and frankly the guy was a little TOO good-looking. No, this was ELLIOTT LITE, since the REAL McCOY was soon edging past me to go outside. I brazenly touched his arm. "Elliott, are you going to be playing later?" He stopped very slowly and looked me up & down like I was crazy. "Uhhh... yeah." "You ARE gonna play? Cool!" He sauntered off. I worked my way as far to the front as I could, but it was obvious I was gonna be standing in a cramped position for most of the evening, and Mr. Elliott Lite just kept PLAYING and PLAYING. I was losing valuable energy with every so-so song. Finally, after the break, Mr. Smith tuned his guitar, took out his Camel Lites (what IS it with musicians and that brand?!!), bought an orange drink for 50 cents, and started playing. It was then that I finally saw Mary Lou, almost directly across from me at the other side of the room. Her hair has been black for most of her L.A. trip, but for the first time ever I was seeing her "live" with a blonde wig, and I have to say she was a knockout. This is the MLL image most listeners know from pictures and album covers, and I was thrilled to finally see her that way... looked like a real nice-quality wig too. Anyway, I caught her eye and we waved. Mr. Smith's first song was new to me, so I assume it was from ROMAN CANDLE. The rest of the songs I heard were all from ELLIOTT SMITH, with the exception of one from the new CD. He handled these songs incredibly well with just his voice and guitar - even the ones that have lots of overdubbing on the CDs. Unfortunately, after 7 songs I could feel my strength fading. Remembering that my brush with death came right after a MLL club show just 3 weeks ago made me err on the side of caution. Damn!! If only Elliott had started at 7:30... oh well, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. I left early, without even a goodbye wave to MLL (she had sat down out of my visual range). One last note: As Elliott began his 4th song, he glanced over at MLL and gave her a shy smile. She positively beamed, looking kinda shyly away, and Elliott went into his song with new confidence. It was a rare glimpse at their very special, mutually-admiring relationship. Anyway, I won't be going to SPACELAND, but I did get a tiny bit of the Smith Live Experience. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 02:33:23 -0400 From: Recordings@aol.com Subject: [MLL] MLL's 1st Post in Her Folder (Archival) ARCHIVAL POST FROM 1995 Subj: From Mary Lou Lord 95-08-23 13:35:22 EDT From: Commelina Hi.Well I guess this is the place where people talk about me,and stuff relating to me.I am aware that this is not"MY"folder.I also did NOT create this folder. But,since it's here,I will talk about things besides-You know what. The thing I like to talk about most is the music that I love, and hopefully share it with you. My favorite songs right now are written and sung by a guy named Elliott Smith. He's in a band called "Heatmiser.I like the band ok,but his solo acoustic stuff is incredible.I had the good fortune to tour with him in March.I would listen to him night after night and continually be blown-away emotionally.I would describe him as a cross between Dylan,Nick Drake, and (dare I say)Joni Mitchell a la "Cold Blue Steel,Blue" phase.Wynton Marsalis says that the "blues"are like a vaccene;-You gotta get a little to take it away. That's how it is listening to Elliott. It's so sad and heartfelt that it takes those feelings away.I can't describe or explain how much his music means to me.I would suggest you get his record and see for yourself.I doubt it will be too long that the rest of the world start to notice this wonderful song-writer,ELIOTT SMITH. Another one of my favorite new records is by PHRANC.She was one of my main inspirations to play music.I had her record"Phranc, folksinger".Her new record is called"Goofy Foot."It's one of Phranc's most lively and"fun"records.Me and Eliott did some shows with her a couple of weeks ago in New York and I hung out with her a bunch in LA.She's such a sweet-heart.Really funny, smart, sincere. You might know her as the "Jewish Lezbian Folksinger"that she is,but her new EP rocks. She's got (get this lineup)... Tobi from Bikini Kill ,Donna Dresch and Kaia from Team Dresch,Satan's Pilgrims,Patty from Hole,Madigan from Tattle-Tale and a bunch of others helping her out.WOW ! It's a really surfy-sounding Summer record. I love Phranc! The things I listen to the most these days are...Bert Jansch,Paul Brady and Andy Irvine,Peter Laughner,The Bevis Frond(home tapes),John Martyn,Shawn Colvin(boots)and still,Guided by Voices-videos that I made while on tour with them. I just recorded a song for Jabberjaw comp,as well as a song Gordon Gaino wrote for some movie, and did some singing on a John Lennon song for a new JL tribute record. That was a cool one because it was with Scott from the -5,Lee from Sonic Youth, and Peter Buck.We did a song called Power to the People.I've also been playing alot in Harvard and writing some children's songs and some crazy Zepplin-esq type Sandy Denny wierd celtic Fairporty stuff. I accidentally smashed my Martin the other day and it's on the mend,so I have no guitar.A record deal would be nice right around now-Oh yea...NO I HAVE I HAVE NOT SIGNED! Well,I guess that's it.Check out ELIOTT SMITH !!!! Thank you for being so supportive-You know who you are and I love you. - -Mary Lou (No more archival posts tonight - just wanted to keep the list alive! - Dino) ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V7 #113 **********************************
