You don't know him, most likely, but I want to share his story to honor his memory and perhaps share some thoughts. When I first met my friend, we were assigned to be roommates at an environmental studies program in Israel, so we had things in common already - the environment, Judaism, commitments to certain ideals about the Middle East that have become harder and harder to maintain. But our friendship deepened over ultimate frisbee, long hikes in the wilderness, and most of all, music. We discovered each other to be equally impassioned about our favorite artists, and equally curious about following music threads back to their common ancestry. I introduced him, a passionate fan of Pavement and Smog and Sebadoh, to Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle. He would later follow those roots backward, and introduce me to the original Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt recordings. He played me my first Sleater-Kinney and Magnetic Fields songs and earnestly studied Neil Young songs on his acoustic guitar. When my friend returned to the United States, he and his longtime girlfriend settled in the Bay Area, where I visited periodically. We caught shows at the Bottom of the Hill and went bowling late at night. He gave me the keys and I drove him and a friend across the Bay Bridge late one night. When he and his girlfriend married in July of 2002, I stayed up late with him and and his friends the night before, enthusiastically mangling Neil Young and Bob Dylan and "Smith and Jones Forever," by perhaps his favorite song. I knew he had suffered from headaches for years, and law school had been terribly stressful and unpleasant for him, but had not heard of the depth of his depression. Less than two months after I visited him in Oakland, and less than a year after his wedding, my friend killed himself. I'm sharing this story only because my friend was a wonderful, loving, considerate person, and because - despite all the obvious truth of the lesson - I wish I could have done something to help him. His wife, with all her love and patience and consideration, was unable to help him through this depression, but I can't help but believe that the more people out there who showed him understanding and patience and love, the better his chances would have been. His life was a blessing for the people who knew him; I wish he could have shared his life with more of us. If you know people with depression, please be as supportive and understanding and patient and loving as possible, not solely to the victim but to the family and loved ones. Thank you. This reminds me of someone for whom I used to work who once greeted me with "You look like Meat Loaf - and I mean it as a compliment". BTW - and completely off the subject - anyone who likes MLL may well like a band called Marine Research that were round a couple of years ago, who sound very similar. This was centred round Amelia Fletcher (Matthew from Heavenly's brother). They only put out one album and then half the band (rather bizarrely) went off to present TV shows. ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V7 #76 *********************************
