Of course Mary Lou is mentioned and quoted. The saddest revelation for me is that Kurt actually had a great life until age 9. He was a beautiful kid and adored his family - it's said that he fought going to sleep every night because he didn't want to give up any time with his parents. He was great at drawing and showed early musical talent. But at 9, his Mom kicked his Dad out, and the world he knew slowly collapsed. Adding to all this, four of his blood relatives were suicides, so if there is a "suicide gene" he definitely had it. Fascinating to read about Slim Moon and the rise of Sub Pop, etc. D ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 May 2004 17:07:03 -0400 (EDT) From: mail@rachelkramerbussel.com Subject: [MLL] OT: Nick Drake movie There's a new documentary about Nick Drake that I thought some of you might be interested in, it's playing in NY at the theater listed below, not sure about other cities: A Skin Too Few: The Days of Nick Drake Cinema Village 22 E 12th St between Fifthe Ave and University Pl (212-924-3363). Subway: L, N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6, to 14th StUnion Sq. $9, seniors and children $5.50. Troubled British troubadour Nick Drake was known for moody, ethereal ballads that wavered from yearning to surrender. He recorded three LPs and suffered countless bouts of depression and anxiety before fatally overdosing on antidepressants at age 26 in 1974. The profoundly shy Drake seldom performed, so director Jeroen Berkvens is hindered by a lack of concert footage. But his brief, accomplished-looking primer, which was originally made for Netherlandish television, is still an interesting meditation on what drove the sad-eyed Brit to createand what drove him over the edge. ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V7 #74 *********************************
