I don't think you can use the fact that something is played on Radio Disney as a complete dis to someone's catalog. I mean jeez, thanks to modern advertising, LUST FOR LIFE is used by Royal Caribbean and SURRENDER is used by Universal Theme Parks. I still love both Iggy Pop and Cheap Trick (feel free to slam me for my love of the Trick). But Jett the "least talented" of the Runaways??? That's a pretty sweeping statement. Especially since Cherie Currie had no musical experience when she joined and has since gone on to create wood sculptures with a CHAINSAW!!! Hmmm. I would posit Joan is more talented than that. And Joan didn't write I LOVE ROCK N ROLL. It's a cover from the UK band, The Arrows. I agree that Lita was pretty darn talented -- probably MORE talented than Joan. But she made the poor decision to do that bad Metal thing in the 80's -- and I was a metal chick MYSELF and still thought she was cheezy. Hey, I have Radio Disney to thank for Michelle Branch (watch out, bricks coming!) I don't hate everything Joan's done, and I'm glad to hear she didn't write I LOVE ROCK & ROLL. (And I take it back: the worst song about Rock is THIS CITY WAS BUILT ON ROCK & ROLL.) The Runaways were a band that had to happen, even if they were manufactured by Kim Fowley. It was an idea that was long overdue (who came before them - Fanny? The Shaggs? Josie and the Pussycats?) I really wanted to like them, and there is some fun stuff on the first two albums. But Joan lusted for success with the intensity Courtney did, with considerably less talent. Throughout the late '70s Joan worked so hard at her craft that her success was inevitable - I do give her credit for that. But not much that's she's done will stand the test of time (unlike Iggy... yeah!) There's nothing wrong with that - we need our Dylans AND our Archies. But man, that ROCK & ROLL song bugs me. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 19:23:57 EDT From: Bopst@aol.com Subject: [MLL] Fwd: worst song about "rock" Return-path: From: Bopst@aol.com Full-name: Bop st Message-ID: <30.55810f4a.2dc82e7e@aol.com> Date: Mon, 3 May 2004 19:23:42 EDT Subject: Re: worst song about "rock" To: DDimuro@soundelux.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Mailer: 9.0 for Windows sub 5106 X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative by demime 0.97c-p1 X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain David Essex's "Rock On" was also pretty horrendous... I thought (and I double checked with the dictionary) that mullet was a fish. As in red mullet, gray mullet, etc. This propelled me to dig a little deeper than Webster's and I found on dictionary.com that a French mullet is a "ladyfish" and that all mullets are "highly esteemed as food." It gets more interesting from there. Apparently good ol' Ben Johnson observed that the small pinchers used for curling the hair could be called mullets. I guess they looked like the curly fish. Still, this fish in the hair wasn't sounding right to me, so I went to a slang dictionary and finally got to the real definition: mullet n 1. a hair style that is short on the top and long in the back. This is more common in rural areas in the USA than in the urban areas. In more urban areas of the USA, mullets are seen as sources and are typically mocked. [sources of what?] Then, the same slang dictionary defines "shag" first and foremost as a sex act. But, Webster's defines it as a tangled mass of hair. So, I guess the hair styling is all in the connotation -- whether fishy or sexy. Or both. It's all in how you own it, yank it, touch it. What about that song "I Wanna Rock You". That is the only line I can remember from it. I think it must have been repeated a lot. "All night." "Dance the night away." It didn't strike me as a rock song, althought it seems to me that's what the song said it wanted to do. My once-friend opened for Joan Jett, her *hero,* and she (JJ) snubbed her a little (so she claims--I didn't feel it was a snub) before the concert and now my once-friend has hated her every since, even though she was very friendly to her afterwards and has since prooved herself to have a heart and to not normally blow people off. Pre-concert jitters... that's all it was. But geez, this gal won't give her another chance. I say "once-friend" because I don't know where she is right now or what she is doing and in whose band. Oh, I wanted to say that a lot of the singers people on this list have been recommending I've seen listed (tho not in person) at Joe's Pub. That's why I was thinking Mary Lou would feel happy. So what is the best rock song? I defer to you guys. I listened to musicals growing up. I can sing "Annie" and "Cats" and "Fame" and by some strange quirk of my best friend, three of Blondie's early albums by heart.
