ML and Kevin are big fans of the show and especially the musical selections (which are supervised by Sam Phillips, I believe) and she wanted to send a fan letter to someone at Gilmore Girls who would actually read it. So, a bunch of us did some quick research and got her a bunch of information. I don't know who had the "best" info, but I remember it was lots of fun calling the production office on Mary Lou's behalf. She was very thankful and might even have said: "You guys ROCK!" (A quick question on the Rolling Stone CMLC article: how does someone who owns half the Nirvana catalogue go broke?!!) But Amy Sherman-Palladino has a lot of idea and influence on the music as well. According to my friend Diane -- who is a friend of Amy's -- Amy was an enormous Grant Lee Buffalo fan and got the idea of having Grant Lee Phillips on the show. Then she loved his music so much, she gave him a recurring role! I'm not totally certain, but I'm pretty sure it was Amy who first had the idea to have the Ramones play such a big (non-appearing) role, as well. For those of you who don't know who Sam Phillips is...please, go listen to some of her stuff. I've been a fan for years & years. She is married to T-Bone Burnett who ranks right up there with my favorite producers. She recently appeared live on Nic Harcourt's Morning Becomes Eclectic out here in LA on KCRW. The show is archived at: http://kcrw.com/cgi-bin/ram_wrap.cgi?/mb/mb040426Sam_Phillips (RealPlayer link) If you're a Gilmore fan, you'll recognize her voice right away. I love her voice because it has a sort of Brechtian quality. She would be at home equally singing folk or Kurt Weill, I think. And, of course, the production on her records is awesome. ;) Ok...nuff about Sam (aka Leslie) Phillips. Back to Mary Lou. I hope she got a hold of someone and we will see her on a Stars Hollow Founders Day stage soon. Wish I could go. I saw her open for Elvis Costello on her first "secular" tour. Julie didn't like her but I did! The Martini album and the one right after it are my favorites. And of course T. Bone is awesome in every way: performer, writer, producer... I was hoping he'd produce Got No Shadow. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 2004 00:55:45 EDT From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: [MLL] The Gilmore Story In a message dated 4/30/2004 8:09:04 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Snsetblaze@aol.com writes: love Sam Phillips too.
