Usually when I do a show and there is a weak turn-out, I will almost ALWAYS take either 25 or 50% of what the guarentee originally was (depending on the turn-out)...I don't like to screw anyone, and I like to be asked to come back to the venue...When you don't demand your guarentee if you have a poor turn-out, the promoters are usually very grateful and they will remember the gesture and invite you back knowing that each party tried, and perhaps it was a fluke, an off-night, or the weather...whatever the cause.the promoter will hopefully remember that you were trustworthy to do business with.......There have been times when I've had a poor turn out and I asked for gas money only....Especially when the promoters are really nice and helpfull....Shit happens all the time...I just didn't like the way the promoter went about this...Calling me, the artist at the last minute, was not cool.....I hung around DC waiting , had to get a hotel room, drove sever hours in a down-pour, spent gas money, etc...For nothing..... So, yea, Kevin was really pissed off and maybe he shouldn't have brought the issue into a public forum....He was more upset for me...Yea...I cried after I got off the phone with the promoter....i was 10 minutes away from the venue...I wan't crying about the money....I was crying because at times it just seems like you try so hard and you keep getting no-where...I know this isn't true though.....I mean, I'm going to Sweden and Ireland and doing shows with so many fabulous people, and I always have the subway....(I never get screwed in the subway)...No promoters , no contracts, no worries, no bullshit.....I don't have to drive 10 hours to get paid the same amount of money that I can make there....And actually be PLAYING...NOT DRIVING...... Ok, so one would think I'm jaded....I'm not...I have been luckier than most people that get into this business...I have no "goals or aspirations"....I never did...I just wanted to sing a good song...When you are true to your passions, your passions will be true to you.... Thanks for letting us vent our frustrations...But also thanks for letting us tell you about the good stuff too.... - -Mary Lou ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 17:14:56 -0400 From: Recordings@aol.com Subject: [MLL] TeleTubbies: Big Hug! Mary Lou, I wish I could give you a hug, and I'm sure everyone here feels the same. But you're right: great adventures await you in Ireland and elsewhere. I had an "Open MRI" yesterday for my fucked-up back that went on for two hours, and I brought BABY BLUE for the procedure. It was very comforting, and the tech lady recognized "that song from the 70's." Checked for Femme Fatale today - nope! But I did pick up Rolling Stone for the CMLC artikle. As the TeleTubbies say: "BIG HUG!" (and a manly handshake for Kevin.) Love, Dino ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V7 #64 *********************************
