My name is Steven Craig Sickles, and I'm a writer and consultant here in Red Bank, NJ. I've been a 'silent partner' on the list for twoweeks, and to alleviate my feelings of lurkiosity I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. I discovered Ms. Lord's music (I don't think I've been on the list long enough to refer to her as MLL) ... ; ... just a few weeks ago via "Got No Shadow", and subsequently "Speeding Motorcyle" and "Live City Sounds." I just recently purchased "Baby Blue", but I'm just finishing my third spec screenplay so I'm afraid I haven't yet had as much time to devote to it as I would like. (I've worn the shellac off the GNS CD though; isn't it always the case that your first is your most cherished?) I feel one of the nicest things about the list, though, is the way the contributors share their favorite artists. Knowing we have (somewhat) similar tastes takes a little of the risk out of investing in previously unknown artists. Several of my favorite artists and recent releases were mentioned by other contributors: 1) Jonatha Brook's "Back in the Circus"; 2) Amy Rigby (her "18 Again Anthology" is a great starting point, particularly for the wonderful previously unreleased song "Keep It To Yourself"); 3) Nellie McKay's "Get Away From Me" To this list, and the list's contributors, I'd like to also suggest singer-songwriter Erin McKeown ("Monday Morning," or her most recent "Grand") and Mindy Smith (both her recent album "One Moment More" and her live EP "Down the Alley"). However, there is one 'relatively' recent release that I consider, without exaggeration, one of the finest albums I've ever heard, and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned. The artist is Kathleen Edwards, and the release is her 2003 debut "Failer." Both musically, and especially lyrically, it's as close to a perfect album as I've heard in a very long time (MLL naturally excluded), and for those who aren't familiar with her music consider this recommendation my first contribution to the list. For further reference, Ms. Edwards' web site can be found at http://www.kathleenedwards.com/, and there's an audio review of the album (with plenty of clips) from NPR's All Things Considered at: http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=920387 [No, I don't have any personal connection to Ms. Edwards. I wish.] In closing, I very much look forward to catching Mary Lou (see, just a couple written paragraphs and I'm already using the familiar) in NYC or Philly, hopefully soon, as well as putting some faces to the names on jingle-jangle at the concert. Best! PS. If I may make a suggestion, should our host be lurking as well, we have the lovely 1,400 seat Count Basie Theater (http://www.countbasietheatre.org/) right in the heart of our town that would be a perfect venue for you. PPS. For those like minded, don't forget the "March for Women's Lives" in Washington, DC this Sunday! It's a very important event, and for those who haven't about it yet, details, registration and an opportunity to give much needed donations can be found at http://www.marchforwomen.org. PPPS. There is no PPPS. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 2004 17:40:57 EDT From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: [MLL] Allow myself to introduce ...... myself In a message dated 4/23/2004 3:42:46 PM Eastern Daylight Time, sickles@exit109.com writes: My name is Steven Craig Sickles, and I'm a writer and consultant here in Red Bank, NJ. Cool there are two of us on the list. Here is another vote for the Count Basie. Mary Lou, you'd love playing it. Andrea ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V7 #59 *********************************
