It is indeed >legit. Yes, the site is well-known, but it seems to me that the reviewers tend toward the music-snobbish side of things, and in particular are probably indie music snobs. If I was writing a review, I probably wouldn't attribute the sentiment of a song to the performer personally, especially when the song was written by someone else like 6 years ago. I just figured "The Wind Blew All Around Me" was a great Bevis Frond song, rather than one Mary Lou picked because of it's particular relevance to her own self. I would agree somewhat with the comment about the middle of the album being a bit slow, but I consider "Fearless" and "Stars Burn Out" highlights, contrary to the the reviewer. Also Azure Ray, who already have been mentioned. :) MJC ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 09:45:47 -0700 From: "Solomon, Aidan" Subject: [MLL] review of Baby Blue The only song that made me raise my eyebrows so far as the order was The Inhibition Twist. I like it well enough, but it just kinda threw off my dreamy mood at the time. I think the rest of it flows perfectly, and I'm utterly in love with the album. The other night Shawn Colvin played a free show in Downtown Dallas, which I went to see. It was just her and an acoustic guitar, and her daughter Callie, who looked about 6 years old. Callie did a couple of dance numbers on the stage while her mom played. The dance numbers were mostly just running back and forth from one side of the stage to another, which Shawn commented "she's doing her Phillip Glass thing...very minimalist" It was very cute. And a great show. She did a lot of numbers from 'A Few Small Repairs' and only a couple from the latest record. Right before she did 'Get Out of This House' she said "Here's another mean song". Shawn opened up the show to requests, and I yelled out for 'Polaroids', which she did, and was awesome and then later I yelled out for 'Wichita Skyline' (maybe my favorite SC song) which she did and was awesome as well. She did a couple of covers, one of which was a Donovan song, but I forgot the name of it. It was a really nice outdoor show in a little plaza downtown with a small stage and about 200 people there. Shawn commented how nice it was to play this kinda show and that it was a very lovely place to be and a great crowd. Very laid back with people just sitting on the steps or on the decoratively shaped fake rock wall, drinking too expensive beer from plastic cups and eating burritos from the vendors there. (I snuck in a couple of cans of beer in backpack...shhh..don't tell anybody) All in all a great show. And free too!
