Wow...am I doing a show with Emm?...That's really cool...She's the one I first heard do "straight to hell" acoustically...I got the idea to do it from her..It knocked my socks off...But I thought my right to passage to do it (not saying that everyone should have a right to passage to do whatever song they want), was that she did it on piano....I thought I'd have a go on the acoustic guitar, and my way is still a little different...(I guess I won't be playing it that night)..hehe....I recently heard Josh Rouse do it (almost *exactly* like I do it *on acoustic guitar, same pattern, etc*) on a clash comp cd that Uncut magazine puit out as freebee a few months ago...Hmm.....I wonder if he did his straight from the Clash.....I don't know too much about him.....I also don't know too much about Emm although what I have heard is great stuff.... I must begin now to waffle on about how fucking awesome the new Peter Bruntnell acoustic cd is!!!...Tom from the UK label I'm on called "Loose" gave me a copy in Austin and I just can't put it down....I've loved these songs in a band forum, but now stripped down, I love them even more....Peter is really one of the reasons I decided to put out my cd on Loose and Tom Bridgewater (who runs the label) is soo cool and sweet and passionate about his artists...I'm really honored to be on the label over there...I'm doing some shows over there with Peter Bruntnell and I can't wait...I'm also doing some shows with Iron and Wine and Rosie Thomas....The Ireland dates are with another awesome songwriter names Josh Ritter who's an old pal from Boston who's record recently went gold in Ireland...He's the shit!...... So, I guess that's it for now...I'm going to be in a mag next month called Femmes Fatale...The photos are a little bit racey but still pretty cute (as cute as I can get which really isn't much (wierd old chick tries to be sexy hehe)...But I thought it would be something very different than anything I've ever done before, and more than anything, it was all in good fun.... When she was here in seattle, I actually requested it a couple times, but she didn't play it. I was wondering if it was too fresh for her (elliott's death, who penned the song) or if she'd ever made a statement that she'll never sing it again, or something like that. I couldn't find any other reason, cause it's a great song. I was just curious if anyone had an idea. Perhaps I should have made them a little bit more hospitable by explaining any relation to MLL and her music. At the request of the moderator, I will only send emails very sparsely once in a blue if I think they are somewhat relevent. A lot of the events I produce around NY celebrate singer/songwriters of top quality along the lines of Mary Lou Lord, a young Shawn Colvin and others. One event I put recently celebrated the Songwriter's Exchange run by Jack Hardy which literally nurtured Shawn COlvin's early songwriting. THere is an amazing recording of "I Don't Know WHy" put out by the Smithsonian with Shawn Colvin, Lucy Kaplansky and John Gorka singing in three part harmony. This all came out of Jack Hardy and his Fast Folk movement....a long story... Anyway, what I wanted to say was I will not send emails unless they are directly applicable to MLL and her music....except I may sneak one every so often if that's okay. SOme of you may occasionally be in the NYC area and may want to hear some live indie exciting folkie type music. But I understand the whole spam situation and I never know what to do with all the junk in my inbox, so I understand why feathers could get ruffled, even my intentions were good. I haven't checked out "Baby Blue" yet but I"m sure it's good...I love that MLL always championed Shawn Colvin and other artists...I love her covers of "Ricochet in Time" and I don't know if I've heard her cover of "I Don't Know Why" but mine kicks booty...maybe some of you will hear it some time... Anyhoo.....all good wishes to everyone, and I apologize for any abuse of this list...just tryin' to help spread the word about amazing local musicians and I wish you all lived closer so you could come the shows....but I'm sure there's awesome stuff happening where you are (please forgive me if this is very rambly...I'm just having a glass of red wine, and I tend to babble on those occasions) All good, Amy Emerman _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? That being said I dig 'Los Lonely Boys'. They are three kids for Albuquerque doing sorta...uhmm...bi-lingual mountain funk pop. Its sorta disposable, but done with conviction. I like it a lot. And 'Polyphonic Spree'. I'm sure you all know about them. They are a local band to me (Dallas). The good news is that the new record is finished and just waiting to be released. They are touring right now with David Bowie. I think these guys have a shot at popping BIG (and I'm not just saying that cause I hang around with them sometimes) You might have a heard some of their music on one of the IPOD/VW commercials. They used to be 'Tripping Daisy; until Wes, the guitar player OD'd. They took some time off and reformed as Poly Spree. They all are married and have kids now, and the music is particularly kid friendly while still being accessible to adults. This is a show you could take your kids to, no problem. Its got happy messages and positive vibes all over it. One of the concepts behind the band is that anyone can get up on stage with them and sing. You just gotta ask nicely and seem like you are into it. And maybe bring your own gown. They wear white gowns as their stage costumes...there could be anywhere from 8 to 25 people on stage wearing white gowns, singing in harmony about happiness and joy. If you get a chance go see 'em, or download a couple of the songs to check 'em out (then go buy the record!). Uhmmm....thats about it. I've been listening to a lot of Taj Mahal's older stuff recently, and vintage ZZ Top (pre beard....though Eliminator is a great album) but you don't need me to tell you that. Oh and Amy Emerman....I'm just not sure where I can catch her playing a live gig....if there was only some way the internet could deliver me a message....oh well. Hear Maggie Moore! If you can find her. Maggie performs live -- mostly acoustic, but also cabaret and theatre. she is not a new Indie rocker. Let me tell you more about her, because she doesn't have a CD/EP or anything out -- yet. So you will have to take my word(s): she will *melt* you in a second like a chocolate bar in the hot sun. You can hardly peel yourself off your chair (if you happen to be sitting) afterwards. She will hold a note longer than I can write an email. When she sings you feel as if you are being stroked inside by lush velvet -- her voice is transforming. She is an underground diamond and she shines so bright. She performs in NYC at Joe's Pub, in Cape Cod, and all around Mass. (especially in the summer) and in Toronto (where she is from) in many different small venues. Although, she was at Lilith Fair for herself and she sang back-up for Sarah McLaughlin as well. Maggie played "Yitzak" in the Off-Broadway "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." She also created and performed the show "Are You There God? It's Me, Ann Margret" and she created another Off-Broadway show that I can't remember the name of, but it won a prestigious award. Her Ann Margret impersonation is *dead-on* and more real even than Ann Margret, which is a little spooky. This gal has many talents! As the persona "Miss Maggie Moore," she is now showcasing "The Chanteuse Club" (often upstate NY, Woodstock, Kingston, but does travel) The Club always includes Kate Pierson (she is so lovely) doing some really wonderful acoustic covers and performing her own work. (I especially love Pierson's luscious "Phoebe's Underground." But of course, Kate is well-known.) Maggie's "Chanteuse Club" gives female vocalists the opportunity to try out new music in a smaller environment with a friendly crowd. Stuff they would not be able to do on their tours or with their groups. (She also introduces new talent.) Gail Ann Piercy (so sorry for spelling) sang some amazing songs off her new record; Debbie Harry, and Jill Jones have performed with The Chanteuse Club as well. Usually it is a different combination of singers each time--three or four women. And it's a wonderful, laid-back, intimate, experience. The energy is so positive and electric. You just don't want them to stop singing. So Maggie is a ringleader -- she loves to MC as she sings, and she brings fellow singers into the spotlight in ways that help them to grow in any way they want to. She supports new musicians, like Mary Lou, except she doesn't sing their songs; she brings the singers on stage with her. Maggie is also a trip and a half as a performer -- quirky, absolutely hilarious (dry humor) and so femme-y as "Miss Maggie Moore" -- it is funny that she played such a convincing boy-toy in "Hedwig." In her own Off-Broadway shows, she writes all of the music as well. I know she has a repertoire built up, but she is hesitant to record. Maggie doesn't really promote herself; it is a self-esteem issue, I think. (I know her a little.) She should be recording. WHY this woman has not put out a CD/EP is beyond my comprehension. I know she wants to. It may be a funding issue as well. Currently Maggie is working on a solo Off-Broadway show (that will travel I am sure) about that glamorous woman who had sex with so many lovers, thousands... she was known for it... I always mix up her name with Eva Ansler (sp?) of "The Vagina Monologues" for some (reasonable) reason. Liz Renee. (sp?) So she is working on her own musical about Liz Renee, "The Girl With The Polka-Dot Eyes" along with her solo singing gigs, and The Chanteuse Club. Sooooo... when you see the name "Maggie Moore" or "Miss Maggie Moore" -- DON'T miss out. I guarantee her performances are fabulous. She's a unique multi-talented woman with a off-beat, quirky sense of humor and she sings gorgeous, moving, vocal interpretations of covers, as well as her own fabulous work. She is a beautiful person. It shows in the way she sings. Like Mary Lou, she has a special quality of presence and you just fall in love with her as soon as she opens her mouth, no matter your gender preferences.
