I am sorry I didn't take notes on a set list and MLL didn't have one. She just kept going and going and going. It was about 2 1/2 hours. And she was amazing. I don't think I can "review" her. But I do want to say what she is doing with her voice, or what her voice is doing with her, it seems as if there is a true friendship developing between them. It must be terribly hard to have this difficulty, especially when your voice is so important to doing what you love. Still, something really interesting happens when you don't know what is going to happen and it seems as if MLL is becoming more comfortable, even curious about this aspect. In fact, I think she can make the most unique sounds! I felt as if MLL and her voice were trying their relationship out, neither resisting, yet neither wholly giving in to the other, yet each respecting each others' individuality. It was like a jazz improv, musicians seeing what they can do with their instruments. A strong alliance seems to be forming and it is such a beautiful thing to witness -- Cinderella Backstreet (as I wrote before) actually made tears run down my cheeks (I guess this is called crying...) I was so moved. I hope she can see her vocal in/capacities as a very special gift. Because from what I heard during the NYC concert.... her voice is lovely, unpredictably interesting, and heartfelt all at once. Many singers aim to alter their voices, or to add intense or interesting vocal effects. Some pull it off powerfully (i.e. ani difranco, in my opinion, also others) but with these singers it seems more gift than "pulling off." MLL has a gift naturally (I mean before,) and now her vocal possibilities are wide open. And that is exciting. I do not aim to underplay how difficult it must be, and has been, for Mary Lou. I just want to point out that her voice was most moving in NYC. And as a different perspective, it can be a thrill to see what your voice can and will do if you don't know ahead of time. Kind of like having a playing partner working with you, always there to amaze and encourage you (if sometimes annoy you.) Also, she can play the harmonica *and* giggle at the same time. That's a talent in itself and made me giggle, too. An incredible inspired performance. I feel funny writing about it... I can't in any way re-present it. I will try to put words to other aspects and moments if I can. As an academic, I try to keep music "pure" for myself by *not* analysing. Music keeps me going, and MLL's songs have been much a part of that -- I just want to feel, be present, let the music in as much and as far as possible because it is so healing and I really need that right now. I just want to soak it in and be transformed. And with MLL I feel the "letting in" and "healing" especially. (Something I don't want to analyze -- it's too tender and I want to keep the tenderness.) The un-set list was similar in range to the set list in Frankfort. In NYC she also sang the fabulous "Sun Spot". :) OK, now I am *embarrassed* for revealing this personal stuff about me and my experience, so everyone delete these imperfect, impartial words quickly!
