But the US press lately seems clueless. Recently read Michael Moore's "Dude, Where's My Country?" in which he pieces together his version of what Bush and his buddies have been up to from unrelated news stories. I don't know why trained journalists can't seem to do that. And his conclusions are pretty darn scary. But ignorance is worse than paranoia ..... I think! Although just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you ......... I'm TOO OLD for this shit!" As a 47-yr-old codger way past his bedtime, I knew what Mary Lou meant... but it was worth it. I got to Spaceland at 7:30 and delivered my basket, then stood outside with another pudgy, balding fart like me. He turned out to be Ken, who took digital pics of Mary Lou at Club Vinyl back in 2000 and would do the same tonight. (No, he is not on this list, but I told him he should be.) Mary Lou appeared out of nowhere, tooling uphill with her little gear-dolly, gorgeous as ever. It is always so nice to see her smiling face after a long absence (4 years!) "Did you WALK here?" I asked. "No, I took the bus from the airport. I am so fucking tired!" Ken and I became ML's guests and got to wait inside. I showed her the gift basket and she seemed quite touched. She gave Ken & I drink tickets, which the knockout-blonde bartender found suspicious. "Are YOU in the band?" "No, I'm with Mary Lou!" Gee, are you SURE YOU CAN SPARE THAT 7-UP? In-between cigarettes (Spaceland has an enclosed smoking room) Mary Lou revealed that she has a risque pictorial coming up in Femme Fatale magazine. I asked her if the photos are "Rachel Style" (i.e., explicit) and she said "Yes!" Ken and I tried to act unfazed. "Really? We'll have to... uh... keep an eye out for that!" The trio of Sister South (two women singers, plus acoustic guitarist) brought in a lot of family and friends, and they were quite pleasant. Gingersol kicked butt (earplugs in!) Ken, who had driven up from San Diego, started falling asleep in his chair, still nodding to the beat. For Mary Lou we moved up front, and both Ken and I took pictures. ML began on acoustic, and she has really changed her singing style: closer to the microphone with lots of vocal mannerisms, almost acting out the songs. It is hard to tell what is related to her Linda Thompson problem, and what she's doing to compensate. Frankly, she sounded fine to me, just different. (She also had problems with the Spaceland sound mix, which also plagued Sister South.) Her songs with Gingersol rocked hard, though I could barely hear the vocals (I may have been too close.) I loved hearing the new material. Older songs like Jingle Jangle are starting to feel nostalgic. A few, like I Figured You Out (which she tried to avoid, but pulled off flawlessly) are timeless... and, with Elliott's death, incredibly moving. (ML said that Elliott's sister was going to be there.) It is hard for me to describe the show in black and white, as Mary Lou's music has provided the soundtrack to the most important years of my life. My reactions to seeing her live are deeply personal and hard to explain. Also, there were no set lists to steal. Sometime during the show I scored a free zippo lighter by answering a few questions for Marlboro, which is funny because I only smoke with Mary Lou. Afterward, Mary Lou dived right into her crowd of fans. Someone ALWAYS gives her a business card, and I can only imagine what happens to those. Slightly overwhelmed, she retreated to the "green room" (covered with band stickers and genitalia drawings) but people came in there too. A young stoner with a top hat talked her into going out to his car "with my manager" and hearing "...just one song from my rock group - that's all! Just one! It would, like, mean so much!" (Of course, Mary Lou did it. Does she ever say no?) I finally said goodbye at around 2:30 A.M. "Are you okay?" ML asked. "Yeah. Why wouldn't I be okay?" "Because you're leaving!" "Well, it's almost 3:00 A.M., and I'm not on Rock & Roll Time!" I shook hands with Andrew Colvin (handsome fellow!) and left Mary Lou to her long journey to Tuscon. I bought Baby Blue at the show, and I really like it. It is loud and rocks, yet is also laid-back; I love that combination. It feels more authentic and stylistically unified than Got No Shadow. However, I hope to make it up to her in Austin. Originally, I didn't think I could make it. Because as of 3 weeks ago, MLL was on at the same time as my friend Joe Purdy (who is so wonderful) and I have to go support my local boy, Joe (he's never played SXSW before). But NOW MLL is on at 10 and Joe is on at 9, so I think I can swing BOTH (I hope). As long as I can get into Mary Lou's show, I'm golden. I can't afford the million dollar badge, so my friend Liz & I will just be "crashing" any venue we can. I'm on spring break...so I plan on constantly having a Jack & Coke in my hand. Nice review of the Spaceland show, D. I can't believe I missed that show. It's literally about .25 mile from my house! Now I feel like those silly teenage girls at the Beatles shows, taking snapshots that would never, in a million years, capture the Beatles (but they did it anyway.) I did get a nice one backstage of ML holding a picture of my son. I also... uh... just HAPPENED to wander past the newstand on Hollywood Blvd, and just, like, on the spur of the moment decided to check out FEMME FATALES. No Mary Lou in the April issue; perhaps she meant May, coming out in April (why do magazines DO that?!)
