As always, seeing her play is a highlight to any month. She was very chatty and looked really good (I liked the haircut). She played several of the usual songs and I believe 2 of the new songs. Playing just 2 new ones was enough to make me want more and completely regret not have been able to attend the Middle East show. MLL was very talkative during the show. She talked about how she's unable to hit the high notes due to panic attacks in her voice. She told stories about the songs she played. How Rachael B. Davis racked up a $200 phone bill when she stayed for a weekend and recommended that we the audience should see her play. It was kinda of a short show. Derek, the opener who was great, played for about 30 minutes. MLL played for just over an hour. That's all I can really say as I'm at work and have a massive procedural memo to write. Besides, I haven't even finished my first cup of tea. I'll try to add a more in-depth review of the show later this week. Her next show at the Middle East is Feb 20. I'm guessing she will play half of her set with a band like she did the last time she played there. Tix $12, available through ticketmaster. The 14 track album was produced by longtime collaborator Nick Saloman of the Bevis Frond. Nick had a hand in writing many of the songs just for this record. Mary Lou did pull out some previously released Frond songs such as "The Inhibition Twist" (from the Rubric release "What Did For the Dinosaurs") as well as "Stars Burn Out" and "The Wind Blew All Around Me" from North Circular. Two classic rock era nuggets are also unearthed--Pink Floyd's "Fearless" (found on Meddle) and Badfinger's "Baby Blue" (from Straight Up). GINGERSOL HEAD EAST Titled "Eastern", the latest from Brooklyn via Los Angeles transplants Gingersol will be out March 9th. These guys will be touring with Mary Lou Lord, both backing her up and opening with their special brand of pure pop confection starting late February. Dates to be posted soon!" Happy New Year everyone and thanks for all the postings on the Elliott Smith tribute show and Mary Lou's shows - for those of us who couldn't make these events, it's really nice to read about them. And I also just wanted to say a public thank you to Mary Lou for organizing the Elliott tribute show - it sounded like a wonderful, touching event. I got into his music through Mary Lou and am ever so grateful to her for that and for just generally championing her favorite artists - I've discovered so much great music from her (besides her own of course!).
