I would have attended but I haven't slept in days due to a killer ear infection that decided to beat me senseless yesterday about mid-day. My heart was at TT's eventhough I couldn't be there. I hope to be well enough to attend MLL's show at Passim Friday night. But I found this in today's Boston Herald. Melissa >Elliott Smith's friends, fans say heartfelt farewell at T.T.s By Linda Laban Monday, December 22, 2003 If only he had known. On a frigid, cold December afternoon, the line outside T.T.'s stretched around the block to say hello and a kind of goodbye to the late indie rock singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, via a special tribute concert organized by his friend, fellow singer/songwriter Mary Lou Lord. Inside, the club was wall-to-wall packed. At first, it seemed a reverent affair as video footage of Smith was screened. But then Elliott made you laugh with his goofing around and quick wit, as when a reporter asked about his appearance at the Grammys. It was OK, he sweetly pointed out, but it was the Oscars. Then it was all about the fans paying tribute with covers of Smith's songs. The result may have been dubious, dodgy, and occasionally delightful, but it wasn't about being brilliant. That role was already taken. This was about the loss after Smith's strange suicide in October. ``Between the Bars,'' ``Angeles,'' ``Waltz No. 2,'' ``Miss Misery'' - it didn't matter what the song was or who sang it.It was Elliott's special genius that shone at the open mic-style show. Locals artist-fans included Buffalo Tom pianist Phil Aitken, who performed ``Between the Bars'' (brave!) and a bold, tart ``Miss Misery'' (stunning!). Aitken then backed Jason Hatfield, who, like most, talked of Smith's inspiration. It was painful watching him slide, he added before performing ``Waltz No. 2.'' As time ran out, Lord squeezed in a quick duet on ``Say Yes'' with a fan named Jeff. One band, Brick Foot, drove from Baltimore to play. Kevin from Chicago opened the tribute with ``Tears of a Clown,'' a song by one of Smith's favorite artists, Smokey Robinson. Given the 34-year-old Smith's personal troubles, the pathos was palpable. ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V6 #86 *********************************
