Just having their names on the petition is not likely to carry any extra weight -- a petition is really about numbers -- but a letter (maybe an open letter to a newspaper?) or public statement or press release from a high-profile performer who started out playing T stations might carry some weight or generate enough bad publicity for the MBTA that they'll have to respond... Look at the way celebs jumped in (benefit concerts, etc.) to support the Bottom Line (incidentally, looks like AT&T pitched in $100k to join Sirius as a major corporate supporter -- see http://www.savethebottomline.com/home.html for details). I know it's not exactly the same thing since in the case of the subway performers there's no "entity" that can be saved if only it can raise a certain amount of money, but the idea of already famous performers who started out there (as opposed to up-and-coming performers who may not command as much respect) getting behind the cause can only help... - m - ----- Original Message ----- > Date: Mon, 24 Nov 2003 01:17:15 -0600 > From: "Jonathan Gillespie" > Subject: Re: [MLL] Hello from Mary Lou > [snip] > And....like....uhmmm....I hate to suggest it cause its really tacky, but I'm > sure Mary Lou knows some famous people she could contact who would be into > supporting this cause, the letter could also be signed by......say..... This came up in the Key West City Commission's campaign last winter to get aggressive panhandlers (ie, drunk and verbally abusive) off the main downtown streets. We were concerned that buskers would be swept away in the process, and attended the meeting in force (some in costume!). They ended up creating a no panhandling/ no solicitation zone, but with exceptions for licensed vendors and "people whose products and services are artistic in nature" - that is, musicians, mimes, jugglers, caricaturists, tarot card readers, etc. Street musicians may perform but they may not ask for money - that would be solicitation. It sometimes seems a fine line, and it's rather grey, but at least the police have left buskers alone ever since. So Duval Street has continued its carnival-like ambience, and those who try their luck get along with their chosen profession, and life goes on. I wish all of you the best in this fight, and send you my heartfelt support. If anyone decides they've had enough and want to try their luck down here, I'll be happy to send you some tips on how to survive and hopefully thrive here. It's very early Tuesday morning, about 1:15AM...I just got back from a show at the Orpheum in Boston. The show I saw was GREAT (Phil Lesh and Friends), but what was even greater was the surprise in store for me in the subway below. I believe it was the RED LINE (Park St. station)...me, my friend Chris and her daughter (who accompanied me to the show) were waiting to catch the next train, when my ears heard something VERY familiar...I thought to myself, "No, it can't be!" I followed the music I was hearing, looked around a corner, and THERE SHE WAS!! I know, I'm probably making it a bigger deal than it actually is, but I HAVE NEVER caught Mary Lou busking in Boston...NEVER!! She asked for requests, and seeing as most of those people were coming from the show I was just at, they wanted her to play some DEAD songs. I should've told them she doesn't do DEAD songs. I was gonna shout out a request, but I'm not one to do that, even at her shows. My friend told me I had a HUGE smile on my face all the way back home to New Hampshire. THAT made my day, how lucky to have caught her playing! If I were by myself, and didn't have a tired little girl with me, I would've watched her play 'til she left. Before the subway doors closed on me, I opened up my big mouth and said, "Glad to see you made it back from Seattle", and waved goodbye. It was meant TOTALLY out of appreciation. I'm seeing Phil Lesh again tomorrow night at the Orpheum. I'm crossing my fingers, hoping I will see her again somewhere in the Boston subway. Thank you Mary Lou, thank you for doing what you do!! - -a fanboy in N.H. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
