Which got me thinking.... It might be very effective if we started an e-mail campaign outside of this list, and started forwarding it to people, and then hoping they would forward it to people and so forth....What would make this most effective is if we could get Mary Lou to write something as a personal message. It could be titled a note from Mary Lou Lord about supporting buskers rights in Boston.....or something like that. Getting this matter out in front of the masses could make a huge difference. And....like....uhmmm....I hate to suggest it cause its really tacky, but I'm sure Mary Lou knows some famous people she could contact who would be into supporting this cause, the letter could also be signed by......say..... Nick Saloman and maybe Shawn Colvin and/or Kathleen Hanna (by the way, Le Tigre ROCKS!) or whoever else. The idea is to inform the most people possible about this situation by putting some celeb power to work. I am absolutley convinced that once we get peoples attention and inform them, they too will sign the petition and maybe even take more action. And if the letter happens to just be from ML, then thats works too, but I bet you there are plenty of people who would be down to put their celeb name on it, they just need to be asked. Myself, I regularly get run out of Dallas DART stations by the Transit Po-Po, so I know what it means to be able to freely play in front of people, and I think it is important. I support this cause 110%, and I know there are many other people in the country, even in the world, who feel the same as I do. And as an aside, during the time I spent in Boston a few years ago, I was pretty appaled at the people who stood in the doorway of convenience stores or coffe shops opening the door and shaking styrofoam cups of change at me. Everywhere I went, there they were. When whatever meeting happens or whatever advisory board is spoken to, its important to make a distinction that busking is not pan-handling. There is no solicitation that goes down, its just playing music, and if people want to throw some change in the guitar case, then cool, if not, then thats cool too. You know? There's a difference. Suddenly I feel like learning some Woody Guthrie/Weavers songs...... I assume in the wake of her emails, many on this list have done the same. Never a bad idea to suggest spreading the word, tho -- people can use their blogs, too! I wasn't sure if I put my actual city & state on the petition if it would carry as much weight since I don't live in MA and didn't want the politicos thinking that since I'm not voting there, they don't care what I have to say. Thus, I left that bit blank XoX--Cin - ----- Original Message ----- From: Jonathan Gillespie To: Bopst@aol.com ; jinglejangle@smoe.org Sent: Sunday, November 23, 2003 11:17 PM Subject: Re: [MLL] Hello from Mary Lou I'm glad to say I've signed the petition, and have sent out an e-mail to the other lists I am on, and to all the people in my addy book threatening horrible things if they don't sign it.
