["Jonathan Gillespie" Subject: [MLL] Who loves it and who don't love it. I've been thinking about something. I was sitting in one of those really really comfy chairs at Barnes and Noble, pretending to read some British music magazine with pictures and snottily written stories of all the hip up and coming music stars in it, and was eavesdropping on some girl talking to her 'only hanging around boyfriend cause he's getting some even if he has to lie and pacify to get it'. She was whining "I don't get The White Stripes" The guy mumbles "yeah..uh-huh..mmm..yeah" and looks at her longingly as if to say can we just go home and fuck so I can ditch you and get high with my friends and talk shit about how cool we are. The girl continues "They're no fun, they don't sound good, they're not cute and I don't like the clothes they wear. I mean, look at this picture...his pants don't fit right and his shirt has all the fringe stuff" I swear to God she actually said that. I wanted to lean over the back of the chair and say "And you can't dance to it" but I bit my lip and didn't. I'm just not one to cause a scene in the ritzy part of town, which is where this particular B&N is located. I should be that person, but I'm not. So this exchange got me thinking. Why do I love Jack and Meg oh so very very much. I must admit I am a little tired of 'em, not like I got tired of my Beatles records when I was 19, but more like I got tired of the Pixies when I was 23. Its damned good stuff, but too much of a good thing...you know... Then I stopped thinking about it and decided I was craving tamales and got up and left the lovey-doveys and the Brit mag on the table and surrendered the comfy chair to someone else. While I was in the car driving to the place that has tamales for cheap, it came to me. Because I can hear how much they love music in their music. When Jack is looking at Meg and strangulatingly screaming the lyrics to 'Jolene' its just beats me over the head how much he loves music. It fills me up and makes me feel all squishy inside and want to jump up and down and giggle like a school girl who just landed her dream prom date. Because I can hear how much they love music. And also because the have good taste in music, but that comes with the terrritory of loving music. The more you fill your head with music, the more you become attuned to the good stuff. So I started comparing that feeling with other bands/artists I like. Beatles...well thats a pretty obvious choice. Pixies too...but that was mostly Black being the music lover/head crazy man and the rest of them were just there to be cool people in the band. But... I need a prime example... Mary Lou Lord! Oh hell yeah. Thats a perfect example. Particularly Live City Sounds, or if you've ever been fortunate enough to see her busk. It really comes across. Not so much on stage or on Got No Shadow. Maybe it peeks through a little bit. I much prefer LCC or my boots of her busking to GNS or the stage shows I've seen. Hmmm. The tamales were really good. With meaty chili sauce on top. Yum! I thought more about this 'I can hear how much someone loves music' subject over the requisite beer that goes with tamales. (Negro Modelo for those of you who where wondering) So...is the converse also true? Last night I watched 'Decline of The Western Civilization', that Penelope Spheeris film about the metal scene in Hollywood in mid-late Eighties. Faster Pussycat just sucks. Thats all there is too it. Sucksucksuck. And then, when interviewed, they admit its all about hot chicks in sexy metal girl outfits and free bar tabs. (I could of said its all about pussy, but that would be crude so I won't say that) Motorhead however, even though they don't perform in the movie, kicks rock and roll ass. I've seen the movie several times, and the only reason I watch it anymore is to laugh inside my head at the dipshits, and pay careful attention to everything Lemmy says when interviewed. Lemmy IS God, no doubt about that. I suppose I also watch it because Spheeris does a good job of showing the dichotomy of 'The Loser Girls/Guys Who Hang Around The Scene To Be Cool and Get/Give Blowjobs' versus the 'People There Because They Really Love Music And They Aren't Just Saying That To Get A Blowjob.' There are a couple of exceptions to the rule, and these are the bands who practice hard enough to become accomplished at their instruments to be good. Namely KISS and Poison. I like Kiss, don't like Poison but I think CC is a really underappreciated guitar player. We can start to divide music fans into the two categories as well, 'people who love music because it makes their insides all squishy' versus the 'I identify myself with whatever music is the hip status quo of the moment' But thats getting into dangerous territory. You would have to start making judgements and subdividing Pixies/Fugazi fans and...well...that doesn't make friends with anybody, except the 'Status Quo Self Identifiers' so I abandoned it and tried my Spanish pick up lines on the waitress. But enough of my blathering. My point is that Mary Lou is awesome, to me, because I can hear how much she loves music in her music, and she is a prime example of this kind of artist. Good for you Mary Lou. If you ever come to Dallas I'd be happy to treat Kevin and Annabelle and yourself to some Tamales and beer, and we can make secret judgement calls about why people listen to the music that they do. Except Annabelle doesn't get beer, she can have a soft taco and a Jarritos Orange Juice.
