Power" Subject: [MLL] Mary Lou at Schuba's Mary Lou kicked off her five-date swing of the midwest Tuesday night at Schuba's in Chicago . . . I made the four-hour drive from East Lansing to see the show. I'd been wanting to get to Schuba's for a show anyway and since I'd not seen Mary Lou in performance before, I thought I'd do the two birds/one stone thing! I'm usually pretty good about jotting down setlists, but since I was covering merch, it didn't occur to me to be much of a fan! I had to stand up most of the time to be able to see the stage as it was a sell-out, standing-room-only crowd of about 160. She terribly underestimated what she'd draw and had but a handful of CDs to sell. So, here's *most* of what she did Tuesday night, in no particular order and based entirely on my failing memory -- she did a two-song encore. Western Union Desperate Some Jingle Jangle Morning He'd Be A Diamond His N.D. World I Figured You Out His Lamest Flame She Had You She's Still Bewitching Me Sayonara Bee's Wing New Thing Now Penny Evans She took a copy of "Live City Sounds" onstage with her to refer to from time to time, holding it up to look at it (I suppose it could have been a marketing ploy, too!), and took a number of requests (except mine -- "Eternal Circle"). Shawn Colvin's "New Thing Now" was especially well-done and "Penny Evans" was a delightful surprise sung, of course, a cappella. I reminded her afterwards that it was appropriate that she did it in Chicago -- the late Steve Goodman's home town. It was a great show . . . great, attentive audience. Mary Lou probably could have played for another hour if she'd wanted to -- the applause went on well after she'd left the stage for the second time.
