Barely 21, she clutches her fingers together in a girlish knot when she sings. Davis's laugh - her constant stage companion, along with guitarist Brett Hartenbach - is high and sweet. Between soulful takes on Robert Johnson tunes and tender, carefully crafted originals, she looses patter like a giddy teen. She may be young, but Davis, who moved from Michigan to Boston less than a year ago to immerse herself in the city's thriving folk scene, has a very grown-up way with a song. She's what's commonly referred to as a natural singer, which means that her voice is as unaffected as it is lovely. But it's her uncommon control, her way of slipping among a palette of subtle hues and shades with perfect grace and unerring command, that belies Davis's years and has caught the ears of Boston's music community so quickly. In the 10 months since moving here, Davis has won a Boston Music Award for best new singer-songwriter, shared the stage with such local luminaries as Mary Lou Lord and Ellis Paul, and become a regular on the New England performance circuit. She'll appear on the Club Passim-sponsored Roots Stage at the Newport Folk Festival on Aug. 3. ''It's nice not to have to beg!'' says Davis, on the phone from her apartment in Arlington. ''I came for friends, music, and adventure, and it's been better than I even expected. People actually are starting to call me now.'' Hardly a novice, Davis began singing as a small child with her parents, who are teachers during the academic year and traveling folk musicians every summer. For years the family and various friends performed as Lake Effect, a traditional ensemble that Davis fronted from the time she was 8. Her father's name is at the top of a list of influences that includes Ella Fitzgerald, Patty Griffin, Willie Porter, and Bob Dylan. ''My dad was the one who explained to a 9-year-old how to switch from chest voice to head voice,'' she recalls. ''He made it visual - `Go on top of the note,' he'd say, `instead of reaching for it.' I consider myself a traditional musician not because of the style of music I play but because I learned it from my parents.'' Davis self-released her debut album, ''Minor League Deities,'' last year. It's a collection of original folk songs, infused with both a reverence for the musical past and a feel for modern pop flavors, that suggests the young singer-songwriter is honing a talent that will sustain her for many years. ''Alison Krauss and Shawn Colvin come to mind,'' says Paul, who arranged for Davis to open his two sold-out shows at Club Passim last month. ''I've only seen a handful of people who can sing like that in my years traveling around. She's got the whole world in front of her.'' Yahoo!
