She made it in the year between her infamous scrapes with Courtney and her signing with Sony/Work (mid-'95). It marked the first time I ever actually saw Mary Lou in "real time" (albeit on video) and it was fascinating: though a bit heavier and with a slightly crooked tooth (later fixed on Sony's health plan), Mary Lou had a luminescent quality similar to Marion Davies, the silent film actress (recently portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in THE CAT'S MEOW.) There are also closeups of her fingers on the guitar, so playing the video frame-by-frame gives you a quick primer on ML's technique. Unfortunately, the only version of this video I've ever seen is a fucked-up version on the SATURDAY MORNING compilation video. This video is "narrated" by Drew Barrymore, which means that she and a bunch of stoners sit around on couches commenting on all the songs. During SUGAR SUGAR there are repeated cutaways to Drew rolling around in Archies-inspired ecstacy, eliminating shots of Mary Lou. There is never any acknowlegement that Mary Lou is even there, and I often wonder if Drew's friendship with Courtney had anything to do with all this (probably not; the other videos are pretty hacked up as well.) (Example of Drew's patter during Popeye: "If I was going to dedicate my life to a green plant, it wouldn't be spinach! Ar ar ar ar ar!") Anyway, if you haven't seen the video, you can at least see most of it on this tape... but if anyone out there has seen or taped the complete, uncut version, I'd love to hear about it.
