Those of you in the broadcast area should check it out. Then you'll see why I have been raving about her. Clever lyrics, memorable melodies, solid musicianship - qualities most if not all of us on this list appreciate. Oh and yes, she's really cute too, in case that matters. And if some kind soul could tape it for me, I'd be ever so grateful. I'm wondering if busking seems more prevalent in certain cities like Boston than in others. Sometimes here in NY there are buskers, but it's not an all the time thing, and I sense in Boston it's more common. Any thoughts? and I'm looking into the spam thing. _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Apr 2002 18:09:13 +0000 From: "Journey Bear" Subject: Re: [MLL] Patti Rothberg and buskers >From: "Rachel Kramer Bussel" > >I like Patti Rothberg - she also has the busking thing in common with Mary >Lou. > >I'm wondering if busking seems more prevalent in certain cities like Boston >than in others. Sometimes here in NY there are buskers, but it's not an all >the time thing, and I sense in Boston it's more common. Any thoughts? > It does seem more common and accepted in Boston than elsewhere, and some artists (Patty Larkin, Ratsy) have started there and moved on. I seem to recall that Ratsy won some sort of award for favorite subway performer or some such. Now, that's acceptance! New York has its share of buskers, especially downtown and in the subways, but it still seems somewhat frowned upon. Here in New Haven the city offers busker licenses, but I rarely see anyone playing on the streets, especially since the Grateful Dead, uh, died. When I went to Austin a couple of weeks ago I thought I'd try my luck, the way MLL did during SXSW. I was informed that the police frown on it, as they assume that if you're playing on the streets you're homeless and they don't want that there. I guess they let it slide during SXSW. I did do a little sitting-in, which apparently is welcomed there. In Key West there is a lot of busking, along the main drag (Duval Street) and at the daily sunset celebration at Mallory Square, though this is controlled somewhat by the same people who coordinate the food and crafts vendors. That is, the jugglers, animal acts, magicians, etc, have to get a license to perform in the middle of the square, but people who want to set up and play around the edges might not have to. I'm still impressed that Rachael Davis moved to Boston partly because she'd heard this was a way to get started there. Word must be out. JourneyBear who misses Key West and wishes it weren't so expensive and out of the way _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V5 #56 *********************************
