I don't know much - hell, anything - about him, but neither of those songs sounds much like the work of a jazz guitarist. For what it's worth, "I'm Talking to You" was the song that got me to buy the self-titled EP after seeing Mary Lou play it at a free show she did at the Hatch Shell in Boston (along with the really mediocre Innocence Mission) one summer a whole bunch of years ago. 1995, maybe? I'd heard of her before, and seen her at the Middle East, but it was that one song that really struck a chord, and though there are other songs I like better by her (am I alone in thinking her best songs are the ones she wrote? I can't be), that one still holds a place in my heart, and I wish she'd do it more often. Not to get off on a total tangent, and I'm sure this's been covered before in here, but how did y'all first get into MLL? She seems to inspire pretty intense loyalty and devotion, and that kind of thing usually has a good story behind it. Then I found out she was working with Nick Saloman (my favorite artist (via The Bevis Frond) of the last 15 years or so) and bought Got No SHadow. It totally blew me away, was my #1 album of '99 and it's been uphill ever since. I'm writing a book on all the artists that performed at the Terrastock festivals, so I started doing a lot of research on Mary Lou for her entry (with much help from Rachel!) and bought everything I could get my hands on. Too bad Mary Lou wasn't asked to Terrastock 5. It's right in Cambridge at the Middle East in October :>(. Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 11:42:03 -0500 From: "Rachel Kramer Bussel" Subject: [MLL] Discovering Mary Lou I may have posted this before, but a long time ago. (I'm pretty sure I have my dates right here, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong). In about November of 1996, I bought the Safe and Sound benefit CD, because I liked a lot of the bands on there and totally supported the cause. I was listening to it and just sitting around, and then all of a sudden this totally beautiful voice came on and I turned it up and sat still and listened to Mary Lou's version of "Polaroids." Then I listened to it over and over and looked at the booklet to figure out who this Mary Lou Lord was. I didn't know if it was a band or a person or what. I went on this 2 week trip to Israel and made a tape of that CD and kept replaying "Polaroids" over and over and just found it so beautiful and touching. When I got back, I found out more about Mary Lou, and I went to Tower Records and found her self-titled CD. I think around that time I might've written her a fan letter! :) Then I heard that Martian Saints was just about to be released, and ordered that online. Then I started doing research about Mary Lou and was coming up with very little, so I decided to take advantage of NYU's free web space and taught myself a teensy bit of HTLM and started a webpage, and then started the very DIY list that morphed into this list. I remember I had some quote of Mary Lou's in my sig line and from that met a few people (hi Joseph!), and then finally met Mary Lou I think at CMJ 1997, and from there I just went to a ton of her shows and I would say have met at least a third of the people on this list at various shows of hers. So that's my little contribution...it all started with "Polaroids," and it's still one of my favorite songs that she plays. :) Rachel _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Mar 2002 10:37:52 -0800 From: darren@bendcable.com Subject: [MLL] Discovering Mary Lou My introduction to Mary Lou came about this way: I was in a record store just browsing with a friend. There was a promo poster for GNS on the wall. It caught my eye, and I think now that that photo says alot about what Mary Lou's musical life had been up to that point. I ended up seeing the cd with the same photo on it, and liked the name of "His Lamest Flame". I don't believe I bought the cd that day, but I did come back and pick it up. Because..... Mary Lou was playing in town that Thursday. I was down picking up tickets for Michelle Malone, who was playing on Friday, and saw that she was playing downtown, with Slim Dunlap opening for her... And, some other band called the Raging Teens... :) Needless to say, I enjoyed the Teens alot, bought their tape, and chatted with Kevin, talked music and Del Amitri with Mary Lou between sets and after the show. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool fan of whatever she chooses to do now. Mary Lou has been extroardinarily nice to me over the years, and I treasure our friendship. I hope to visit Kevin & Mary Lou on their home turf sometime in the future. I buy cd's left and right and give them to people who I think might become fans themselves. And I have succeeded many times! That's my story... looking forward to the next visit... I was living in winthrop so I went through Park Street every day. I first heard a female voice singing "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I think I spent about an hour listening to her that day. I would see her often on Fridays and I would sit there for an hour or more, sometimes chatting. I had a copy of the tape that she made in 1992 or 3 but lost it to an ex gf. I now live in Maryland and I miss hearing her live. I have however added to her fanbase down here by sharing my favorite cuts off her CDs which I have put up on my work MP3 server.
