I was a member of the studio audience for The Nields' live broadcast on a local access TV show in Greenfield MA. These 15 people were selected via a trivia contest on their email list, so presumably these are dedicated fans. With two exceptions, we were college-age girls and guys over 40 (who could theoretically have college-age daughters) - the same age groups as MLL's fans. Can anyone please explain this? You don't need a deep understanding of demographics, any insight would be helpful. They always have good bands and good food in a cozy atmosphere. (Try an empanada! Total yum) And I very much recommend checking for ML busking on Sixth Street. Last time, she played until the street sweepers came out and chased us off. Alas I won't be attending SXSW this year, as I'm living in So. Oregon and making wine. Wine or SXSW?????.....hmmm When my froend told me ML was scheduled to appear, I seriously thought about it. (Not to say that the women are not into the music.) Actually, why are there often more women who are fans of female singers? Do music fans in general (or do general music fans) tend to gravitate toward singers of their same gender as themselves? Is there a gender bias for obsessive music fans? In the Mary Lou Lord case, while I was there I kind of thought that the older men were fans of the artists who Mary Lou covers, and therefore liked her because of it. These would be Richard Thompson, Bruce Springsteen, Dylan, maybe some others like Big Star and Billy Bragg. I also have a non-gender-based theory. I saw a band play over the weekend, Jonathan Donaldson and the Color Forms, though it was only Jonathan Donaldson. Because the band was not there, he performed solo acoustic, which was very different than the way he sounds iwth the band. With the band, I would describe it as wild, swirling, carnival rock. Having heard him with the band, I could hear how he was singing similar to the "wild swirling" arrangements, but the overall effect of the music was very different. Afterwards, some of the people who hadn't heard him before and really liked him were two women closer to 40 than to 20. Maybe the sound of an acoustic guitar is more easy listening, and therefore more appealing to those of us who are older, and more likely to say, "you kids turn that racket down!"
