MARTIAN SAINTS TOPS MLL BALLOT!!

Here are the results of the unofficial MLL album survey:

1. MARTIAN SAINTS EP 8.8
2. MARY LOU LORD EP 8.5 
3. LIVE: CITY SOUNDS 8.4
4. GOT NO SHADOW 7.9
5. THE PACE OF CHANGE & MLL/SEAN NA NA (TIE) 7.5

TOO FEW VOTES TO COUNT:
REAL (5 votes = 8.7)
JINGLE JANGLE MORNING (6 VOTES = 8.6)
SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE

Total ballots received: 9

Though this is a very small sampling, I was still surprised to see how highly
the MARTIAN SAINTS EP rated with MLL fans.  I assumed that the MARY LOU LORD
EP would rule - indeed, it came in second, and a couple more votes could have
put it over the top (right, Rachel?) - but there's no denying the very high scores everyone
gave to MARTIAN SAINTS.  What's fascinating to me is that hardly anyone ever
talks about it, and even Mary Lou thought the MLL EP was "better." 

MARTIAN and MLL actually have a lot in common.  Both start out with
hard-rockin' Nick Saloman tunes with a full band ("Martian Saints," "Lights
Are Changing") then shift into acoustic mode. The MLL EP is strictly
acoustic, while MARTIAN follows with the acoustic-based "Salem '76" and "I
Figured You Out," ending with 2 acoustic tunes.

I think MARTIAN is a great EP, with Elliott Smith's I FIGURED YOU OUT and
SALEM 76 worth the price of admission.  But I'd still give the edge to MARY
LOU LORD. There's not a bad song in the bunch: Lights Are Changing, Helsinki,
That Kind of Girl, He'd Be a Diamond, the (devastating) Bridge, I'm Talking
To You, the (instant classic) His Indie world, and the disarming Daniel
Johnston cover Speeding Motorcycle.  Mary Lou's essence has never been so
perfectly captured. I'd love to hear the reasoning behind the votes.

Just behind MLL is the LIVE: CITY SOUNDS CD, and with the top 3 CDs all
primarily acoustic, I think it's fair to assume that most ML fans prefer that
side of her.

GOT NO SHADOW, ML's only fully-produced major label release, still divides
the MLL camp down the middle. Ratings went everywhere between 5 and 9,
averaging at 7.9.  While this album has its fans, there's no way it garners
the loyalty of MARTIAN or MLL.

MLL/SEAN NA NA rated last (alongside the freebie THE PACE OF CHANGE.) For a
split-artist EP, this isn't surprising, but fans may not quite accept ML as a
rockabilly babe in BANG BANG (which would have fit better on a Raging Teens
disc.) HARD ROAD is excellent ML in a country mood, while AIM LOW is
bottom-drawer Nick Saloman: nice but not transcendent.

I'm surprised more fans don't have REAL - among those who do, it rated very
well (8.7) - higher than MLL! Same with JINGLE JANGLE - those who have it
love it (8.6) but not everyone has searched it out or can play vinyl,
apparently.

These results are just for fun, maybe to spark a discussion.  Thanks to all
who voted.

Rachael Davis will be performing at the Somerville Theatre Saturday,
February 9 as part of the 10th Annual Festival of Women Songwriters. The
evening starts at 7pm -- Rachael is due to start at about 10pm.
