(And it was at night.) Actually, the (directional?) microphone used probably did a pretty good job of eliminating any sounds that weren't coming directly from Mary Lou. I think on regular multi-track live albums the ambient noise of the audience is recorded on its own track(s), with microphones directed at the audience. (I think Mary Lou only was directly recording her voice and the guitar.) On soundboard concert tapes I have heard, the audience is really only audible occasionally when they do something especially loud. Sorry if this is old news. Mary Lou has been nominated for a Boston Music Award - Female Singer Songwriter. In the same catagory - Catie Curtis, Kris Delmhorst, Melissa Ferrick, Jess Klein, Lori McKenna, Erin McKeown and Deb Talan. Also, Rachel Davis has been nominated for New Singer Songwriter. This is the best review I've seen yet. He really gets the tone right. I just did an internet search on my review and came up empty. Maybe because it's in pdf format? I dunno. Anyway, here's the url: http://www.intermixx.com/webzine/pdfmags/InterMixxWebzine_88.pdf though in all fairness it pales in comparison to Mr Klinge's. Fortunately, since I'm reviewing ML's self-released LCS as part of my Best of 2001 list, I may get another crack at it, by including my review of the Rubric release as part of my Best of 2002 list. I've had/gotten to do this before with re-releases. After all, the main point in what I'm doing here is to put the word out about outstanding music that escapes widespread recognition. Any extra opportunity to do so is A-OK by me.
