I was also surprised that CITY SOUNDS didn't actually contain any city sounds, and that the recording was studio-quality almost to a fault. I'll bet that reviewer would love my Santa Monica tape, with car alarms and sirens and diesel trucks and rude passers-by. Not only is she expert at unearthing great songs from bands firmly entrenched in the indie rock subculture (the Green Pajamas, Big Star, and her favorite, the Bevis Frond), she also got her start busking in Boston subway stations. She recorded the crystal-clear "Live City Sounds" there, showcasing her endearing, intimate soprano, her acoustic guitar and her interpretive gifts. Lord's roots in Celtic folk surface with two of Richard Thompson's best-loved songs ('1952 Vincent Black Lightning' and 'Beeswing') but she also resurrects the Pogues' lively 'Sayonara'. Small gems from the Magnetic Fields, Heatmiser, and Daniel Johnston (she sings his 'Speeding Motorcycle' in those Target ads) seem the quals of established classics by Dylan and Springsteen. She loves these songs, and that love is contagious. - -- "Not quite true romance, my superior and I" The Loud Family ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V5 #23 *********************************
