It's not too favorable, but it's short, so I'll send it along: The headline and subheads are: ALBUM REVIEWS Sonic Reducer Do You Read With Android Eyes? The Lost Sounds ask the tough questions. PLUS: Mary Lou Lord and Teenage Fanclub take you back-back-back! to the '90s, a Neurosis singer sinks into the Blackness, a strange electronic/cabaret record intrigues. snap judgments Mary Lou Lord City Sounds (Rubric Records) Ms. Lord, with that cute, raspy and oh-so-fragile voice, descended into the Boston subway with her guitar and a DAT machine to record her third full-length release, which consists mostly of covers. Busking gave Lord her start, see, long before fame came, briefly, then departed. The cover song can be an inspired art form of its own, but the risks always run high. Mary Lou's pared-down, heartfelt version of The Boss's "Thunder Road" is great, but the rest of the record is standard coffeehouse open-mic fare. Sure, it'd be refreshing to hear Richard Thompson or Dylan echoing off the walls during Boston's rush hour. At home, though, skip Lord and go right to the source. - --Eric Larson I thought it weird that he considers some of the selections "standard coffeehouse open-mic fare", especially given the Magnetic Fields and Pogues, but hey. Any press is good press. Where do you think he got the "third full-length release" bit? I guess he should have said "sounds like standard etc." While that is more accurate it flows less smoothly and has less impact. >but hey. Any press is good press. Where do you think he got the "third >full-length release" bit? > Really. My first instinct was: "Ohmigod have I missed something?" That's the power of the press. Readers tend to believe what someone else has written and published more than what they themselves know. Believe in yourself and what you know, I say. After all, MLL fans* including members of this list are better informed than 99.99999% of the general public. Maybe he meant "Mary Lou Lord" - the one with the heart on the cover. It's got 8 songs, that's almost full-length. What do I know. But hey, if someone out there knows about this mysterious elusive full-length release . . . BTW, cdnow.com has "Got No Shadow" for $11.49. * I've been wondering - is there a name for MLL fans? Like Deadheads or Fruheads. Lordheads doesn't work for me - -head is an overused suffix, as are -stock and -gate. I was thinking, perhaps Lords & Ladies? Suggestions?
