My take is that there are so many Kims in the "indie world" that Mary Lou thought of the lyric first, knowing instinctively that there were enough Kims out there to justify the joke.  Kim is a very common "indie" name, just like "Mike" is a comon rock name (I'll bet you can think of 4 Rock n' Roll Mikes right off the top of your head.)
