I wasn't familiar with it, it's a folk song and she said that she wants to get more into that stuff in preparation for the newport folk festival. When I saw her busk a few weeks ago in Boston she sang also sang "Ballad of Penny Evans" a few times. It's by Steve Goodman and I looked it up online and it said that Michelle Shocked has also done it, I really don't know anything about it but I like Mary Lou's version. The Mercury Lounge show was very good, most of the usual songs, similar but slightly different to the Philly setlist. Sorry I don't have much else to contribute. She's also doing "My Back Pages", but she said it's the Ron Sexsmith arrangement from "Bleeker Street". (I didn't hear her do this one.) The live CD will probably not come out on Kill Rock Stars, but on Rubric Records. There may be a couple of extra songs on their version. Marshall Crenshaw does "My Back Pages" (sounds to me like The Byrds' version), Ron Sexsmith does "Reason To Believe," sounding so much like Tim Hardin it's eerie. It doesn't look like I'll see her until Newport - very psyched she got invited to this - and I am sure I will write voluminously about that. She is doing a songwriting circle with Sara Hickman, Rory Block, and Kate McDonnell, which gets a big WOW from me! Hey - does anyone know anything about Eddi Reader? Britsh s/s, folk/roots/country/pop, lovely voice, good sensibility, earthy yet spacy . . . I've just recently been enlightened as to her existence (she's been recording since 1991!), and I'm trying to learn more about her, besides the usual website stuff. She has absolutely one of the finest voices ever! She's from Glasgow, Scotland although she's been living in London for some time. Her primary fame came as lead singer of the British pop group Fairground Attraction, which she left after they released one recording, "First Of A Million Kisses", to have babies. She has been performing solo since then including a couple of recent brief US tours -- most recently as an opener for the Hothouse Flowers tour. There is a bit more information about Eddi and Fairground Attraction at her unofficial website: http://web.bham.ac.uk/doveral/honey/ and lots of info, too, at a Japanese (She's big in Japan) fan site: http://www01.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/ca2/soullove/eddi/eddi_top_e.html Pat ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V4 #86 *********************************
