By Charlotte Robinson It's unfortunate, but the extent of a woman's participation in a rockabilly show usually amounts to dressing up real pretty and swooning over the boys on stage. It's a welcome relief, then, to discover someone like Miss Amy Griffin, who contributes hot guitar licks, backing vocals, and songwriting to the East Coast combo the Raging Teens -- and dresses up real pretty. Originally from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the Raging Teens comprise Griffin, Kevin Patey (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Matt Murphy (upright bass), and Keith Schubert (drums). The Deke Dickerson-produced "Rock 'n' Roll Party!" is their second full-length effort, and it's chock full of authentic '50s-style rave-ups. Few who attend this rocknroll party will object to the sentiments of the Patey-Griffin duet "Let's Drink Some Booze," which also features hot piano work by special guest Carl Sonny Leyland. "Hit the Town" and "I'm on Fire" will also set the cats and chicks to boppin', while Griffin's instrumental composition "Walkaround" provides an excellent showcase for her sizzling guitar work. Another highlight is "Lies," a country-tinged tale of betrayal co-written by Patey and wife Mary Lou Lord, whose own touring band once featured none other than Miss Amy Griffin on guitar, keyboards, and Theremin. Thankfully, The Raging Teens don't have to use Griffin's gender as a gimmick, because they are a strong enough band to generate enthusiasm with their music alone. Her membership is just like icing on the cake, further proof (as if we ever needed any) that the ladies can do it, too. Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Just in case anyone is interested . . . there is at least one other "rockabilly chick" out there worth catching (even if she isn't connected to MLL) - Rosie Flores. I've only seen her at one festival (two sets - one mainstage, one dance tent) but she really cooked. And with just bass and drums backing her. But her material is deeper than one usually would expect from the genre. She is really a singer/songwriter who writes in the rockabilly format, just as Joy Eden Harrison is a s/s who writes in a jazz/pop vein or Amy Rigby is a s/s who writes in many genres.
