Would that there was a recorded version of "Galway to > Graceland" around... well, with no disrespect to richard thompson and the great song that "galway" without a doubt is - i assume that it partly achieved its legendary status because thompson chose not to release it for so many years. i suppose it's a bit like bob dylan's "blind willie mctell", another amazing song, but i doubt that people would call it dylan's greatest achievement if i had come out properly in 1983 and he would have performed it at shows as well. it's a bit like saying the "punkrock version" of "western union desperate" from the l.a. sessions is the best rendition of the song - part of the attraction definitely is that it's unreleased. just my two cents... carsten ps: talking of thompson's "galway" - there is also a five song "teaser" sampler of the "watching the dark" set around, kinda hard to find, but definitely the cheapest way to get your hands on the song. - -- http://carstenwohlfeld.de "i have learned that to be with those i like is enough" (walt whitman) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 22:58:33 From: "Steve Bornstein" Subject: Re: [MLL] Richard Thompson BTW & FWIW I met up with Richard Thompson nearly two years ago at The Guinness Fleadh in NYC. His press conference got bumped down to a meet and greet, where curious journalists could queue up to ask him a question or two. There were only a few of us, so I got to ask him two. Mine concerned covers: 1) Whose version of one of your songs is your favorite? 2) What song fared the best as a cover? His answer to 1) was some song and performer I had never heard of before, so I don't remember (it's in my notes somewhere). But his answer to 2) was "Wall Of Death" - I believe he is not fond of his own version, or that he thinks other people tend to do it better than he - and he mentioned that he had heard MLL do it once, and he really liked her version. I once saw Mary Lou sing it, and after she was done someone yelled out "Oh, do another Nanci Griffith song!" to which Mary Lou replied, "I don't know any Nanci Griffith songs." I don't know if she was being funny, indignant, or ignorant (NG's version is well known), but I thought it was pretty darn funny. In an inside joke kind of way.
