Not trying to be sarcastic. Why don't you two post some signs around Austin; that you're trying to find Mary Lou Lord to buy her new record. Then these could also double as advertising for her new record. Sounds cool. dave. dave8x10.com >Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 03:11:32 -0600 >From: doug m >Subject: Re: [MLL] SXSW > >On Sat, 17 Mar 2001 01:54:40 -0600, "Jonathan Gillespie" > wrote: > > >Hey Everybody! > > > >I'm in Austin for SXSW and I have been looking for Mary Lou, but to no > >avail. I didn't get to see MLL, as I had to go back to Dallas fro work Sat. night. I did however see a butt-load of bands. Good shows: Ryan Adams did an electric set that rocked real good. All new material, and he said the line from Back To The Future "This is an oldie, well its an oldie where I come from. Blues in B fellows. Just try to follow me" Lucinda Williams was awesome both nights I saw her. All new material except the closing number, Joy, both nights. Jurassic 5 and Black Eyed Peas were awesome. Full of Hip Hop goodness. David Rawlings and Gillian Welch were the best though. Beautiful beautiful voices, great guitar playing, and Gillian even picked up a banjo for a song. A young lady from North Carolina named Tift Merritt, who is label mates with Ryan and Lucinda (Lost Highway, a new Universal label) was pretty good. I'm guessing she's about 21. Great voice. Big loud and powerful with enough range and control to be pretty. Good songs as well. Bad shows: William Topley (Lost Highway showcase) He didn't play any instruments. Boring voice, its loud but no range nor control, just loud and gravel. He kept pacing the stage and shaking his ass AT the audience, not WITH the audience. William had either too much blow, or not enough, I'm not sure. Amy Ray of Indigo Girls did a set on 107.1, which I happened to be listening to, and she's doing a "rock thing" now. I won't say too much, but in one song she kept pronouncing Johnny Winter's name as "Yawnny Winter" ughhh. There were a whole whole buncha more bands I saw, but nothing else that really stood out.
