Wylie got invited to a "showcase" performance at Sony Pictures in L.A. and came back with a cassette of REAL, which sat unopened in his office for months. I used to pick it up and say "who's this?" until my friend Chris finally played it... then called me on the phone: "Get in here - you have to hear this!" He played SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT, and that was it - I took the tape and played it constantly while driving to and from work. Mary Lou HATES Real, but I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that she was sick at the time she made it, and the bad feelings left over from Ponder's management. I've taped her playing a lot of the REAL tunes live, and put them in the same order as on REAL, and they don't sound a whole lot different. One of Mary Lou's tendencies is to look down on her past work in favor of what's coming up. She was very high on GNS when it was being made and now seems to dislike IT, too. About the only work she consistently seems to stand up for is the KRS EP MARY LOU LORD, which is certainly THE album which most captures her essence, I think.... but I love REAL, always will.
