I went to the Iron Horse show too. Had to blow off a perfectly good show by Gandalf Murphy and The Slambovian Circus Of Dreams (really) at The Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport CT to do so, but I've seen them a few times recently and the opportunity to see MLL and Amy Rigby in one night was too much for me. But please check out GM&SCD if you can. They are my find of the year for 2000. Mary Lou was her usual nervous self at the start but soon warmed up. She didn't do my first request - Martian Saints - nor will she ever, I believe, even though I said the audience would sing the theremin part, but did relate her impressions of the movie about its inventor. Still, songs like "I Figured You Out" and "Beeswing" went a long way toward making this a very enjoyable set. I see she played a lot of the same songs at Passim, where she also got to play longer. And there she did do my second request, "Two Boats." Sigh. I have a set list but I think it's at home. I'm very pleased to see that someone else on this list liked Amy Rigby. I thought she might be a little too rocked out or country for fans of MLL. In fact, I thought it was an odd pairing of talents, even though both are excellent in their own ways. But yes, she was indeed amazing, a phenomenal songwriter and engagin performer, if somewhat off as a singer. Still, she is like Dylan in that regard - the material is so strong one forgives inconsistencies in singing. She is going to be on Conan O'Brien tonight (Monday 1/22). It's a repeat from October which I missed the first time around. She says she had to use the show's band rather than her own, so that means her song is probably going to be one of her more straightforward ones. Too bad, for her sense of humor and gift for irony are among her strong points. Anyway, she is still a lot better than most, so please check her out. Oh, and Carsten - you were correct the first time, this was indeed her first show of the new millennium. As much as I don't like it, and it doesn't make intuitive sense, and the vast majority of the public think otherwise, the millennium (and century) begins with 1/1/01. This is because when Europeans began reckoning time based on Jesus' birth, they started with the year 1, not 0 as they really should have. 0 is essentially an Arabian invention, as is algebra, and Europeans hadn't figured this out at the time. I do wish there were some way to switch over now, but that would mean having to live through another year with the same name/value. And how could we do that?
