The opener, Matt Nathanson, told some pretty funny stories, including one about a groupie who was engaging him in a somewhat predatory manner ... before Mary Lou frightened her off. But then he did a cover of Springsteen's "Thunder Road," which is just weird because Mary Lou has covered it frequently. The other cover was an embarrassingly entertaining singalong to Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer," which elicited a fairly enthusiastic reaction. Otherwise, Nathanson struck me as a junior David Wilcox, who in turn has always struck me as a junior James Taylor. Mary Lou played perhaps 45 minutes, covering some of the better known songs in the repertoire ("She Had You," "Aim Low", "Some Jingle Jangle Morning", "1952 Vincent Black Lightning") and attempted "Beeswing" but demurred when the folks in the crowd wouldn't shut up. Songs which I didn't know before included Knots and Crosses' "My Own Worst Enemy", Magnetic Fields' "I Don't Want to Get Over You". I expected to hear "Galway to Graceland," but she didn't do it. A good set but nothing extraordinary, I thought. I was chatting on the train afterwards with two young women who were at the show; either of them on the listserv? This is not necessarily the order. There may have been another song; I didn't go, but the person who sent me this list also thought there was was a song that went "I've got to hand it to you" but after some discussion she thought that song was "Sunspot Stopwatch". I bought the Rubric Records CD from Kevin at the show on Sep. 28th for $6; I don't know if that was the wrong price or not, I thought Rachel recently reported it would be out in a couple weeks for $14 (or was that only the vinyl?) I guess the main piece of info here is that she is recording tracks for a live album.
