Everything that Lord's voice touches turns into a little cotton candy-like puff of pop heaven, and these three tunes prove it anew: "Bang Bang" is a buoyantly cartoony rockabilly rave-up (it actually contains the lyrics "rooty tooty toot"); "Hard Road" is a downcast drinking-buddy song; and the anthemic "Aim Low" is just lovely and perfect, displaying Lord's sweetly pained vocals and shimmering guitar work as well as Saloman's lyrical acumen. The real estate at the CD's other end is occupied by Sean Na Na, also known as Sean Tillman (formerly of Calvin Krime), who puts his splintery warble to use in three endearingly off-key songs about getting fucked-up and feeling bummed. Which is ok, I guess, except that I couldn't help wishing there was more Mary Lou instead. -- Andi Zeisler And I ran into Dave from Rubric Records outside last night's Sleater-Kinney show (to those S-K fans on the list, they are rocking so much this tour, plus cover songs! I'm seeing them tonight at Maxwell's - yay!) and he said the compilation with Mary Lou's cover of "From Galway to Graceland" will be out August 29th - The info is also at http://www.rubricrecords.com - they are the ones releasing the next Raging Teens CD, sometime this fall, and they put out that Green Pajamas CD with that song "She's Still Bewitching Me."
