"small artist", huh? i know she ain't no michael jackson or, um, madonna, but mary lou does sell a lot of records. i fact i know many bands who'd kill to sell as many records. and if it's really more "exposure" she'd be after, she would know how to get it, i'm sure. i kinda like the idea of having more live stuff available, but i don't think putting any of her studio recordings on the web would be a good idea (apart from the fact that it's probably illegal, too). as far as i know 30 sec sound clips of almost all her songs exist on the killrockstars.com or mllord.com site but on various online retail- sites. i know that some people are looking for the "pace of change" stuff and maybe the cute radio version of "she had you", but if there was really a huge market for it, sony would've reissued those songs or put them out properly and not only as promos. carsten - -- http://carstenwohlfeld.de "people are crazy and times are strange / i'm locked in tight, i'm outta range / i used to care but... things have changed" (bob dylan) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 13:03:59 EST From: AstralRose@aol.com Subject: Re: [MLL] Re: jinglejangle-digest V3 #40 << "small artist", huh? i know she ain't no michael jackson or, um, madonna, but mary lou does sell a lot of records. i fact i know many bands who'd kill to sell as many records. and if it's really more "exposure" she'd be after, she would know how to get it, i'm sure. i kinda like the idea of having more live stuff available, but i don't think putting any of her studio recordings on the web would be a good idea (apart from the fact that it's probably illegal, too). as far as i know 30 sec sound clips of almost all her songs exist on the killrockstars.com or mllord.com site but on various online retail- sites. i know that some people are looking for the "pace of change" stuff and maybe the cute radio version of "she had you", but if there was really a huge market for it, sony would've reissued those songs or put them out properly and not only as promos. >> Ok, ok, I was trying to sound more noble in my first post than I really am. . The real reason I'd like to get some Mary Lou rare and live songs together is so that us, her fans, can have access to them - I'm willing to create a web or FTP site with the ones I get together (which, so far, isn't many). As far as I know, Mary Lou doesn't object to the sharing of her live stuff, and I think some of us (and I'll take on the main work for it) should band together to provide a site that has Nary Lou rarities and live shows in mp3 format on it (unless there already is one - if there is, someone please point me in the direction of it! :^). I'm not talking about a couple of songs, either - I'm talking about everything we can get our hands on. If you're like me, I want *more* Mary Lou than she's even offically released (oh, that's another thing - no studio songs on this site, unless maybe it's like the "Sugar, Sugar" thing from Saturday Morning). I'm also wanting to put something like this together for at least Elliott Smith and Aimee Mann, too - is anyone with me here? I know, for a lurker I'm suddenly coming up and taking a lot of action, but I think that as fans of a "smaller" (not completely unknown :^) artists, we need to band together to get shared resources. Please e-mail me if you think this is a good idea, and especially e-mail me if you'd like to help or have anything to contribute :^). Thanks - and if I've offended anyone with my many posting, my deepest apologies. :^) ~ Lesley ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 10:14:48 -0800 (PST) From: Rachel Bussel Subject: [MLL] napster, elliott smith and "sugar sugar" I feel so technologically backwards - I can't listen to MP3s and even if I could, I don't know how, so I'm pretty much staying out of this discussion. I do know that on the elliott smith list (elliottsmith@onelist.com) some people have set up an ftp server and they put up lots of his live and unreleased stuff. For those of you who like the Saturday Morning Cartoons CD and "Sugar Sugar" - I highly recommend the video version of this. It's totally cute and fun, and has all (I think) the songs from the CD with accompanying videos. Mary Lou's has her playing and eating candy and having all these pretty colorful candies being poured into her guitar case. And totally diverging from the previous threads, I've been listening to the new Lois and Brendan (Canty, from Fugazi) CD that Kill Rock Stars just put out and it's really beautiful. Much fuller than her previous albums and more soulful. :) Rachel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! The Grateful Dead were one of the best bands when it came to allowing bootlegs of concerts, but they had no problems suing webmasters who needed to add advertising to pay for the bandwidth and equipment need to run a their site. The Dead didn't seem to want to hear that they were only using the advertising to pay to keep the web site open. They didn't believe that it was a labor of love, the felt that it was a profit making enterprise. To do this I think that you will have to go the mail order route with a few people burning disk for the ones that don't have them. Maybe do a monthly or quarterly concert. Anyway, it can be kind of hard to do any trading when your first starting your collection and have nothing to give in return. Bill McNair>> I can see why the Dead would sue - I would've too if there was advertising on it. However, I have my own web space (I'm not sure how much is it is - enough, at least, to rotate a couple of concerts a month, if that's what it comes down to), and I don't need to advertise - I don't mind paying for everything out of my own pocket (I have pretty much already :^) *if* there's an interest in it. As for getting the shows - I can trade quite a few Pearl Jam shows, and a couple of other things, but again, my problem is that I don't have any Mary Lou Lord. :^) Also, I'm not quite sure how you get songs off of a CD - you need a ripper, am I right? Well, anyway, as I said before, if you would be interested in a site such as this one, please let me know - you're in no way obligated to help out, I'd just like to know if people would use it. And please spread the word about it - - it won't include just Mary Lou, as I said, but Elliott Smith, too, at the very least (and hopefuly more - I hold a special place in my heart for the band Goodness - has anyone here ever heard of them?). Anyway, any more questions, just aim them my way. I know as soon as I cracked open "Got No Shadow" and the postcard fell out, I completed it and sent it in and received my copy of the EP a few weeks later. If this card offer was only in the initial pressing of the disk and is no longer available, that might be a good sign that at least Sony is already on to the second pressing.
