But I love Phrank. I only have Postivly Phrank, but it's great. That one has a rather wild story for me attatched to it, I got it for free, new, a guy at the record store near me gave it to me free, just for being a regular custotmer. Any one Remember Two Nice Girls, fun band. CHeck out I Spent My Last Ten Dollars On Birth Control And Beer (I liked my life better when I was sober and queer) a satire of going back in the closet. I also have the album she did last year, Milkman, but haven't listened to it as much. But all of you - I totally recommend the self-titled Kaia album - it's so pretty and beautiful and I could listen to it over and over... ok, this is actually unrelated to music, but while we are on the subject of writing and gayness and whatnot, an interview I just did with the writer Tristan Taormino is up at: http://www.LesbiaNation.com If anyone HAS the new ep, please tell us about it - I am totally psyched to hear it cause I have really enjoyed "Aim Low" when I've heard it at shows. :) Rachel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If you've never heard of them (how's that possible?) go to their web site and learn: http://www.pansydivision.com . I'm just starting to read the Nick Hornby book so don't give away too much ! I admit that I'm new to this list so it does not make a lot of sense to me why we are talking so much about gay musicians ... MLL is n't gay is she (and of course that doesn't matter one way or another) ? Another gay rockNRoller who is the best rocker in the world in my book is Bob Mould ! Anyway , back to lurking ! - - Russ - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: ; Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2000 9:42 AM Subject: Re: [MLL] Mary Lou In A book... dykecore > I've never heard Kaia or Team Dretch, although I know the Butches came out of > that band, an album I plan to buy. Charity Ball, from Fanny, rocks. Wow you got > to see June, cool. Fanny were one of my first "favorite bands." I have all 5 of their LPs. I actually got to see them perform a live version of "Rock and Roll Survivors" in New York just before they disbanded. It was a creepy concept where they all came out wearing monk-like robes, right down to the hoods covering their heads throughout the first 3 or 4 songs. Sadly, this material (which was all new and not on the LP of the same name) never got released. Very interesting lineup, too. Suzi Quatro's sister, Patti, had replaced June on lead guitar (after she went solo) and the drummer was the mother of future Playboy centerfold and wife of one of the Motley Crue guys, Brandi Brandt! The June show I saw was also amazing. She didn't do any of her Fanny material, it was all new material from her solo LPs. I spoke with her between sets and she asked if I played an instrument. When I told her I fooled around a bit with the bass, she invited me to sit in with her on a song or two during the late show! Too bad I wasn't good enough to accept. Very nice lady. Know what she's up to these days? I've heard a lot about Deadly Nightshade but never heard > them. I have their self titled LP as well. Not bad - more in a country/folk style, but some pretty good pop tunes as well. I love Isis too, and have heard Carol McDonald solo, the album > isn't much but she does a great cover of AC/DC's Girls got Rhythm. Another fave - Isis. I was sort of into female rockers back in the early '70s, which is when I bought all the Fanny and Isis LPs. Birtha was another that got promoted/denigrated as a "female Mountain," but a few of the tracks were pretty good R&R. > I had heard rumors about Janis Ian, but was still surprised that she came > out. Another favorite from day 1. Can't tell you how many times I'd listen to those old Verve LPs over and over in my room. I never would have identified her with being a lesbian based on her lyrics, which seemed to strike a chord with a lot of teenagers (male and female) growing up shy and somewhat lonely. I always thought her lyrics were pretty gender neutral, which is what I liked about them so much. She could be singing about herself, but I could identify with all the feelings and emotions she was dealing with. Haven't been to crazy about the recent stuff, tho. Her recent one that Ani Difranco produced was OK.
