I'm 39. But, there's a short story behind my getting into her music. I was walking around this record store in Portland (Everyday Music downtown for that other Portland lurker) and there was a GNS poster on one of the walls. I saw it, didn't think too much of it. And everytime around the store, I'd see that poster. Then, I ran across the cd, I looked at it, and pointed out the fact that she did a song called Him Lamest Flame to a buddy of mine (it's a take off on my favorite Elvis tune). Laughed about it a bit, and put it back. Then, I was down buying tickets to see Michelle Malone, and Mary Lou was playing the night before at the same venue. Tickets were like, $8. And I remembered her as being the one from that poster. So, I thought I'd go along and see what it was like. I went back to the shop and bought GNS, so I'd have a basis of what I was in for. And, liked what I heard, and was looking forward to the show. Well, the Raging Teens opened for her, along with Slim Dunlop (you know, that tour) Loved the Raging Teens; Slim didn't appeal to me too much. But in between, I kept running into Mary Lou. She getting water, me getting a local ale. In our conversations, she sang me a song that she loved called Not Where It's At by Del Amitri, and I guess you could say we "bonded" at that point. She made me promise to send her some more stuff by Del Amitri (which I did). I loved her set, and talked with both her and Kevin after the show (having purchased a Raging Teens tape!). I've seen her play 6 or 7 times now, including busking on the streets of Seattle. So, that's my little story on how I got into the music. The fact that she's a wonderful person didn't hurt things much either! I'm 51 (52 in January), and feel 35 (most of the time). I think that's due to listening to more than the Beatles and Dylan, etc. I try to keep up with music, and Mary Lou is part of that. I heard her on a compilation CD a couple of years ago, and sadly have yet to get to see her. But I will.
