But Thurs was one of the more interesting nights. It wasn't so much because of Mary Lou's set as it was the crowd. Some drunk kept getting in Mary Lou's face (literally) while she was singing. A few times he grabbed her mic and just started yelling. The first time Mary Lou just let him ramble. When he was done she looked a little stunned and said, "Okay, thank you." The second time she tried to shut him up with, "Shh, here come the cops." The third time he reached for her mic she sternly warned him, "Don't touch it!" After he stumbled away (with help from a guy in the crowd) Mary Lou commented (I'm paraphrasing)-You know how you have a really bad day? And you go home and complain about your really bad day. Well where is someone who is homeless going to go? They have to blow it off somewhere so I try to remain cool. Later three women stopped to listen. After a few songs they requested Pave Paradise. I had no idea what the heck they were talking about. But Mary Lou went right into Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi and the three women happily sang along and danced. Later someone asked for "Stoplight". Even Mary Lou wasn't sure what she wanted. "You mean Sunspot Stopwatch?" The girl yelled, "No. You know, the stoplight changes." Mary Lou laughed, "Oh you mean Lights Are Changing." Towards the end of the night two homeboys showed up. They were constantly referring to Mary Lou as Jewel. "Yo Jewel, that was a nice song. Yo Jewel, sing us another song." Finally Mary Lou said, "My name is not Jewel. My name is Mary Lou." The night ended when a cop parked right in front of where Mary Lou was playing. She quietly strummed her guitar waiting for him to pull away. Finally he yelled over to her, "Don't stop playing because of me." So she played Vincent '52 and dedicated it to the officer. Quite an interesting evening indeed. Michael-thanks for posting the ticket info for the Respond benefit. Not as strong a line up as the cd release party. But I plan to be there for Mary Lou's set. Britta-sorry i have no info on how to get a signed poster. But Mary Lou is selling her Kill Rock Stars cds, self-titled and Martian Saints, on Newbury St for $6. If you need either of them I will gladly pick them up for you and ask Mary Lou to sign them for you.
