We got there about half an hour before Mary Lou came on and my friends played pool and I went to stand near the stage. Mary Lou looked really cute - her hair is really short now, she had her Kelly Family tank top on, and jeans and black shoes and a choker, and she seemed a little giggly but cool, except for that sound thing...I thought the sound was fine, but she kept asking the crowd if we thought she sounded ok and telling the sound guys to change this or that. From what I recall she played...(not in order): His ND World, Book, I Figured You Out, Sunspot Stopwatch, Vincent Black Lightning, Wall of Death (another Richard Thompson cover that my friend's boyfriend requested right after Vincent), His Lamest Flame, Subway, Some Jingle Jangle Morning, Western Union Desperate, Camden Town Rain, I think she played Cinderella Backstreet...I forget what else she played but she closed with a cover that I didn't know. People were requesting Seven Sisters and The Bridge and she said she doesn't remember how to play those anymore...she also said that about Subway but she played it and that was probably my favorite song of the set. Andrea - I gave her the Pisces book and she said thanks. She also said the Raging Teens won a contest to play at Boston's Fleadh festival which was held on Wednesday. So how was the famed Iota gig? :) rachel ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 10:47:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Michael Zwirn Subject: [MLL] Mary Lou Lord Iota Cafe 6/20 report After a dreary, rather miserable and rainy Sunday it was a relief to finally watch the Iota Cafe slowly filling with customers in advance of Mary Lou's show last night. I was there ridiculously early, but due to the bad weather, the lack of publicity and the Sunday evening show, there wasn't much of a crowd. Iota is a great place to here Mary Lou's music, because it's a sit-down venue in which most people are there to listen, not just drink and smoke. This is the first time I've seen her there, but she is very fond of the place and said that she would like to return sometime soon. Mary Lou (in a Kelly Family tank-top and a pretty nifty rhinestone necklace) opened with "I'm Talking to You" and Neil Young's "Barstool Blues," which struck me as a bit incongruous between the morose lyrics and her chipper delivery. Then "ND World" and "Book," followed by the song which starts "oh Bill," whose title I can't ever recall. The real surprise in the set for me was Richard Thompson's "Wall of Death," which thrilled me immeasurably although someone immediately shouted afterwards "Play more Nanci Griffith," which confused Mary Lou to no end. "I don't think I've played _any_ Nanci Griffith." (Nanci is just one of scads of artists who've recorded the song, and her version is by no means definitive!) Otherwise, she did a lot of songs from 1991 - "the horrible year" - including "Camden Town Rain" and "Helsinki," plus "Western Union Desperate/Just Like Heaven" and "Some Jingle Jangle Morning." Complete listing: I'm Talking to You (Jimmy Bruno) Barstool Blues (Neil Young) ND World Book (Bevis Frond) "Oh Bill..." Western Union Desperate ... segueing into the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" "sucker for his double dose" - what's the title for this one again? Hey Antoinette He'd Be a Diamond (Bevis Frond) Some Jingle Jangle Morning I Figured You Out (Elliot Smith) ("whiny and pouty like a good Elliot song") Lamest Flame (with the sung electric guitar solo) Wall of Death (Richard Thompson) Cinderella Backstreets (Peter Laughner) That Kind of Girl (Matt Keating) Lights Are Changing (Bevis Frond) (with bits of Mellencamp and the La's) 1952 Vincent Black Lightning (Richard Thompson) Subway "the song had to get sung" (never liked this one and can't recall title) Camden Town Rain Helsinki "by the evening we'll be laughing" (anyone know this one?) So! A long and fun-filled evening for all involved. Mary Lou looked great and happy although when I spoke to her she said she's had some medical issues since the baby was born, and is now consumed with Teletubbies. Yikes. She plans to get back in the studio next week and record a 7-inch for Kill Rock Stars, which is pretty exciting, although she laughed when someone asked "when were you signed to KRS?" She replied, "Honey, you don't exactly get _signed_ to Kill Rock Stars." Met a few folks whom I remember from passed shows in DC or elsewhere and even though I didn't get home until around one o'clock, it was worth it. The opener, a woman named Gina Blake, plays bass with a country/punk group called the Blacks, based in Illinois. She was not expecting to do the set, and almost never performs solo, but I liked her anyway. She reminded me of what MTV's Daria might be as a country musician, all dour and acidly funny. One Tom Waits cover, and a song she wrote frantically while I watched her before the song called "Pabst Blue Ribbon on a Saturday Night," were the highlights. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael J. And she promised to fly back down here for another show soon (so anyone in the DC area who missed it, don't make the same mistake next time). I found out at the last minute that the show was on (there was all that confusion about it being canceled) and luckily was able to go. Michael, it was nice meeting you there - sorry it was so brief, but my parents wanted to get going (I have another year until I'm 21 so the only way I could get in was with them. They really love Mary Lou, too, though - especially since she dedicated Western Union Desperate to them at the last Iota show). Michael, you're better at writing up reviews of shows, so I'll leave that to you if you want to write anything more detailed about it. I just wanted to get a quick note in. : ) Jaymes (remember- the "y" is silent) ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Anyway, Kill Rock Stars seems to have updated their webpage and under Mary Lou I found: **Split 7" on KRS in October with Sean Na Na** this is great news...Sean Na Na are an Olympia band who Lois plays with on their single, I like them. Others on this list I'm sure can say more about them. So this is cool news...something new by Mary Lou. :) Rachel - ----------------------------------------------- Get your free email at http://www.alloymail.com ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V2 #88 *********************************
