Well after reading about Andrea's night of seeing Mary Lou at the Tune Inn I've decided to post my own recollection of seeing Mary Lou at Call The Office in London Ontario on May 14, 1999. My friend and I were really excited about seeing Mary Lou, so we had bought advance tickets, turns out that there were only about 20 people at the show. I guess I just needed the security of knowning I'd see Mary Lou for sure that night. There were two opening bands, Kepler and Snailhouse. Throughout the whole time that these two acts were playing Mary Lou was sitting around with an older women (anyone know who she could be?). Snailhouse played second (just a guy with a guitar) and he wanted to play a Neil Young tune and asked Mary Lou to sing with him because he didn't know all the words. So Mary Lou sang with him (sorry I don't remember the name of the song). For those who are interested Mary Lou was wearing dark denim jeans, with the bottoms rolled up, a dark green revolver t-shirt, a black choker studded necklace and a big black puffy jackey, oh and the coolest black shoes. I found the courage to go up to Mary Lou and ask her to sign my friend's and mine ticket stub. She signed my friends "Joanna, Thanks for coming, take care (heart) Mary Lou Lord", mine she signed "Olivia, thanks for coming to my teeny intimate show, (heart) Mary Lou Lord. When she signed the stubs, I asked her if she could play an Elliott Smith cover when she performs, and she said sure. Finally at about 11:30 Mary Lou came on stage, she played around with the mike and guitar because she never did a souncheck earlier. All of the 20 people in the club came together closer to hear Mary Lou. She was making fun of the crowd for being the least responsive crowd she's ever played for. So she played (not in order): some jingle jangle morning, Western Union Desperate, I Figured You Out, 1952 Vincent Black Lightening, Birthday Boy, He'd Be A Diamond, He's Lamest Flame, She's a Book, Cinderella Backstreet, Hey, Antionette, and others I just can't remember now...sorry. But she played 'Not Half Right' and she looked right at me in the crowd (however big a crowd may be when you have 20-30 people in it) and said "this song is for Olivia" whoah!!! Because it's a Heatmiser song and Elliott Smith was in that band. Inbetween each song she told the crowd what the next song was about. Before the played 'I Figured You Out' she mimicked (is that even a word?) being Elliott Smith, it was cute. So after the show, before I left I went up to Mary Lou and told her she was great and asked if I could get a picture with her and she agreed, so my friend took the picture, and Mary Lou thanked me perfusely for coming and I said "no problem!, thank YOU!". Afterwards, my friend told me that when she took the picture Mary Lou and I had the same facial expression. I didn't believe her until I got my pictures developed and the picture is really cute, we both have the same smile. So that was one of the most memorable show nights of my life so far. :) Take care, Olivia ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V2 #87 *********************************
