I AM dancing, literally, I just did a little jig at my desk...woo-hoo! This totally brightens my day, which is already bright because I'm seeing Mary Lou tonight... have a good weekend everyone... oh, really briefly, I entered a contest for Cree Sumner, this WORK artist (she used to be on A Different World), and the prize is CDs by various WORK artists including Mary Lou...I entered at this store Toys in Babeland on Rivington St. in NYC but maybe they're having a similar promotion elsewhere. Also, this has nothing to do with Mary Lou, but in case you're bored or just want to read something I wrote, I am writing a sex column at: http://members.tripod.com/ctomag/may16cto/lust1.html :) rachel > ---------- > From: Zerowork@aol.com[SMTP:Zerowork@aol.com] > Sent: Friday, June 18, 1999 12:38 PM > To: jinglejangle@smoe.org > Subject: [MLL] MLL New York > > In a message dated 6/18/99 1:23:28 AM Pacific Daylight Time, > owner-jinglejangle-digest@smoe.org writes: > > << if it's the 23rd, i'll dance around my apartment for the rest > of the day, >> > > > Start dancing. See http://washington.sidewalk.com/detail/48750 - ---- With the song "My Indie World," Mary Lou Lord's infamous sendup of punk-centric cool kids, the onetime subway singer helped make the underground safe for traditional folks like herself. Circa 1995, her shows were enclaves of earnestness; her fans sat cross-legged on the floor, most of them hip to Lou Barlow and Joni Mitchell for the same reasons. On her old label, Kill Rock Stars, Lord was always appealingly out of place. Sounding like Juliana Hatfield stripped of the need to rock, Lord's recordings from her KRS releases on up to her Sony debut, Got No Shadow are like John Hughes' growing-pain movies condensed down to song: sweet, romantic, sometimes even tragic but not very deep. Lord has never been prolific (she has written less than half her recorded output), but she does have fine taste in songwriters. Listen for this itinerant fan's reworked versions of Freedy Johnston, Daniel Johnston, Nick Drake and (if you're lucky) Van Halen. Marge Calhoun is an Alexandria resident who writes rocking country tunes, many of which find their genesis in literature of all types. Calhoun once wrote a song inspired by the text of a Marion Barry speech. Her most recent disk is 1997's Freedom in Captivity, and another one is expected soon. Their calendar doesn't go that far into the future, they just have a notice of the digital fest as an upcoming festival. Check back in a couple of weeks. Jill Sobule is also great! And for all of you going to The Tune Inn - have a great time! Wish I could be there. No, on second thought, have a horrible time so I don't feel silly for driving all the way to Northampton (Nields, Beth Orton) instead of staying at home with Mary Lou Lord. (Gee, that does sound nice - oh well, dreams are free) Oh all right, have a great time!! Say hi for me... I don't know much about the Tune Inn, but I just got a return call from Fernando there and he confirmed Mary Lou at 11. I thought that was pretty nice of him to call me back...just throwing that in. I'm definitely looking forward to tonight, though I think I'm gonna need a few beers to relax from a hectic week. see whoever's going at the show... Also, if anyone has tried to unsubscribe from the list and had a problem, I will take care of it on Sunday - I'm having trouble with my NYU email. :) Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 16:44:29 EDT From: Superjen21@aol.com Subject: Re: [MLL] MLL New York/New Haven In a message dated 6/18/99 3:32:28 PM Eastern Daylight Time, steve_bornstein@hotmail.com writes: << a notice of the digital fest as an upcoming festival.
