Ay Caramba! Hi everybody Just subscribed, thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Steve, though a lot of people call me JourneyBear. Why is a good though long story and we'll save that for later. I live in New Haven CT. In my dwindling spare time aka other life I write for a regional music/arts magazine called Mixx. It is through my adventures there and also at the Paula Cole e-mail list harbinger that I learned of Mary Lou Lord. I liked Got No Shadow enough to put it on my Best of 1998 list. Finally got to see her for the first time at The Iron Horse in Northampton MA as part of a Respond Showcase (more on these later, too) on Valentine's Day - a once in a lifetime lineup that also included Merrie Amsterburg, Jules Verdone, and Deb Pasternak. It was Ms Lord's first gig after giving birth and she was a little rusty, but still quite charming and easy to talk with. Anyway, someone had asked about the gig at Tune Inn in New Haven. Our local papers don't have it listed yet, but when they do, or if I can get a confirmation from the club, I'll pass it along. HOWEVER, if you are thinking of going, I must warn you this is an awful place to see anyone who has any subtlety at all. They book mostly grunge, ska, and rock, and crank the volume to 11. There is no ambience, three picnic tables for seating, chainlink fence around the bar area - it is so weird, I can't see how she ever got booked there except (a) she/her mgmt didn't know any better; (b) there aren't too many places in New Haven for someone with her drawing power to play right now. Go if you must, but bring many grains of salt. It ain't all bad. I went to a blues show there once that was pretty good. The opening band played far too long, which pushed everything back like an hour. But they let the headliner, Debbie Davis, play a full set - and I do mean almost an hour and a half - which meant closing the bar and letting her play way past 2 AM. So that showed they really do care about the music. But a show of Boston rock bands - Gravel Pit and Jen Trynin - was excruciatingly loud, painful even with earplugs. Just had to warn you, you can't tell with this place. Actually, on further reflection, she will probably need as many friendly faces there as possible. So disregard everything I've said, charter buses, drag all your friends and relatives, go, go, go!! Well, that's all for now. Peace JourneyBear PS: The Iron Horse is a MUCH better place to see ANYBODY. I make the 80-mile drive a lot and it's almost always worth it. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
