That was a band show; this one was solo acoustic. She looked and sounded great - since I saw her she kicked her addiction and had a (beautiful) baby girl, and she was practically beaming the entire way through the performance. Mary Lou did about a 90-minute set, mostly of cover material as is her wont, and the covers reflected her myriad influences: Elliott Smith, Lucinda Williams, Guided by Voices, the Bevis Frond, Richard Thompson, Heatmiser, etc. She also threw in odd little bits of the Cure, the Beatles, John Mellencamp and the La's, often coyly hinting at riffs she learned as a street performer and later adopted into her own repertoire. It was a really wonderful, fun show, and she didn't seem at all nervous in her first New York gig in a long while. I was with Rachel, who runs her mailing list, so we hung out backstage and met with her and her partner Kevin, guitarist for the rockabilly Raging Teens. All told, a really great evening. The opening act, White Hassle (terrible name!) was a side project of Railroad Jerk, whom I'd heard of but never seen. It was a simple drum/guitar/vocals duo doing a mix of indie rock, hard country and roots music, and it was very entertaining. The covers included Hank Williams and the Silver Jews, which illustrates their influences pretty well, and the drumming was simply fantastic. Also, the singer was one mean harmonica player. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael J. I am looking for a copy of the MLL Bottom of the Hill show in San Francisco from April 1998... It was a fantastic show with Raging Teens and Slim Dunlop... I'm just checking to see if anyone else happens to have a copy of it... I know Rachel and Mike (was that your name) were at the show, and supposedly Rachel has a copy, but I don't think I'll ever see a copy... Can anyone help me out... It was my favorite show...
