I didn't know just how crowded or if she would be with a band or not, so I get there at 9pm, music starts at 10. I went by myself. Im sitting in the back of the club (its practically empty..maybe 20 people or so), and there are chairs way off to the side of the club where Im sitting next to another girl. I see this girl, with a black north face down vest, short hair walking up to me. I think....hmm...OK she wants a chair or something, so I start to move over so she can grab herself a chair to sit...and she keeps heading towards me. I do not recognize her at all. I go "Sorry, do you want a chair or......" ITS MARY LOU!! What a dork I am! She starts laughing..."She goes...she's not recognizing me!!" I go "I am so sorry...gosh your hair is soooo different!" Well, it was, but whatever Nadja...like its MLL. Anyway, she goes How are you? And we just start talking about everything. It was like talking with a college classmate or really close friend I haven't seen in a long time. Can you believe how cool she is to recognize me, I am going thru gender reassignment (See website if you're wondering...Im just a regular girl, and I have a respectable job as a customer service rep for a Major cellular company here in Seattle...Website: http://members.tripod.com/~NadjaD/index.html)...Anyway, She just sits down and talks to me for a long long time. She went to the bathroom and I ran up the street to 7-11 for a camera. Came back shot some pics and then Mary Lou and I watched the opening bands. She had her baby, Annabelle...and we talked about Kevin, Amy and the Raging Teens. Shes going to send me a free CD of theirs. She gave me her personal email address. I gave her mine, she goes, wait, how did you get the name Nadja? I start telling her my whole (nauseating) Checkhov / Natalie Merchant story and she goes...no I meant how were you able to get your name Nadja Dee@aol.com. Haha. Like HELLO? Yeah, I can communicate...whatever. We talked about her mom recently passing from cancer. She says that the last conversation she had was so normal. It was about eating and watching the Grammy's then Mom said Im going to bed, and she passed away in her sleep. Really peaceful like. She says she got to see the baby and everything. It was really good. I told her about everything in my life. Her set was amazing as always. Just her and her acoustic guitar, though now she has removed the cougar sticker and you can see the sticky residue as a ghost of its former self. I don't know why she removed it though. I asked her if the song "That kind of girl" was about Courtney, and she said no. That she just has this knack for finding songs that are orphans. They just really fit her, and her talent lies in the fact she has a good ear. She feels her songs are too wordy storytelling...and I asked her how they have started to change with the new baby. She said they are becoming more just "Fa So La De Do" songs...where you just sing La La La. And she seemed to criticize herself for that. She played just about every request yelled out, except the ones she couldn't remember. It was funny, her accent seemed really strong tonight. She even did a parody of Paaak Yer Caaa En Da Yaaad. Mary Lou is just so easy going, she puts you at ease. I couldn't believe how she just treated me as an old friend. Oh and no she isn't using a band...just herself which is exactly how her music should be heard. (sorry to ramble on so much, and sorry if you aren't open minded to this letter...I just wanted to share) ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V2 #43 *********************************
