Tori Amos, from the choirgirl hotel, which has taken up permanent residence in my cd player and is perhaps my favorite cd of all-time; 2. Pulp, This is Hardcore. Forget Britain, they're the best band in the world. As Spin noted, "who else smiles at you in quite the same way?"; 3. Garbage, Version 2.0, because Shirley Manson really does deserve the cliched "voice of a generation" moniker; 4. Mary Lou Lord, Got No Shadow, which touched my heart; 5. Madonna, Ray of Light, because she reinvented herself and became relevant again when everyone thought she was finished, and she did it while making some really good music; 6. Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach, Painted from Memory, the best "I just got dumped" album one could find; 7. Liz Phair, whitechocolatespaceegg, her best work yet, more musically realized than her previous records; 8. Beck, Mutations, for the marvelous "Tropacalia" if nothing else; 9. R.E.M., Up, because they're still innovative after all these years; 10. Ani DiFranco, Little Plastic Castle, because she's a sister doing it for herself. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Dec 1998 10:51:22 EST From: PopStarOne@aol.com Subject: Re: [MLL] '98 top 10 Adam's Top Ten! (Woohoo!): 1. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion -- Acme 2. Robert Pollard -- Waved Out 3. Busta Rhymes -- E.L.E. 4. The Make*Up -- In Mass Mind 5. Lucinda Williams -- Car Wheels On A Gravel Road 6. A Tribe Called Quest -- The Love Movement 7. Frank Black and the Catholics 8. Neutral Milk Hotel -- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 9. Lauryn Hill -- The Miseducation of... 10. June of '44 -- Four Great Points ...note the conspicuous lack of Got No Shadow or XO. I was really disappointed with both of these albums. But I best not say that on this list for fear of painful retribution. ~adam np GbV-------alien lanes! woohoo again! ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V1 #244 **********************************
