I was just walking in to rummage, and found two women on stage (really, the small alcove above the main section of the store) playing a cello and contrabass, sawing away and singing rather nasty, grrlpunkish lyrics. It was so unusual that I stopped and watched them do a twenty minute set or so, then bought their disc for $10. They're called Bonfire Madigan, the Madigan being Madigan Shive, the cellist, composer and singer. The other woman is Sheri Ozeki on contrabass; their record is called ... from the Burnpile and is on Kill Rock Stars (Tribe 8, Team Dresch, Mary Lou Lord, Unwound). I liked the performance better than the disc itself, because on the album they also have drums and some guitar, which makes it sound more conventional, but it's all pretty neat stuff. If you can imagine Sleater-Kinney, Bjork and the Balanescu Quartet jamming together, you have a vague idea what they sound like. I plan to write up a review of the record sometime in the next month or so. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael J.
