Circa '95, her shows were enclaves of earnestness; her fans sat cross-legged on the floor, most of them hip to Lou Barlow and Joni Mitchell for the same reasons. On her old label, Kill Rock Stars, Lord was always appealingly out of place. Sounding like Juliana Hatfield stripped of the need to rock, Lord's recordings from her KRS releases on up to her Sony debut, Got No Shadow, are like John Hughes' growing-pain movies condensed down to song: sweet, romantic, sometimes even tragic but not very deep. Lord has never been prolific (she has written less than half her recorded output), but she does have fine taste in songwriters. Listen for this itinerant fan's reworked versions of Freedy Johnson, Daniel Johnston, Nick Drake and (if you're lucky) Van Halen.
