The attacker is Everett True, longtime critic for Melody Maker, one of the thousands of people who claim to have coined the word "grunge". He's also somewhat responsible for breaking Nirvana in the UK. Everett True is most likely a pseudonym, since that's also the name of a cartoon character from the turn of the century who always beat up someone who annoyed him in the last panel of the strip. Since coming to Seattle, Everett has beat up some beloved personality weekly. Sunny Day Real Estate, Liz Phair, and now Mary Lou. The Liz piece was his finest so far...with Mary Lou, he makes several ridiculous misstatements, which make it seem even more rantlike than his previous pieces. Sorry I don't have time to post the whole item to the list, but it's very long and I'm supposed to be working now. The table of contents features this review: "Mary Lou Lord : Scapegoat of the Week". The piece is titled: "Reasons Not to go See Mary Lou : Ass Kissing in the USA" Nevertheless, in the concert listings Everett (the new music editor for the Stranger, replacing Kathleen Wilson who someone on this list claimed had a grudge against Mary Lou) has not only allowed it to have a bullet, meaning it is one of the recommended concerts of the week, but he also written a little paragraph about how great Lois is, who happens to be playing on the same bill. I'm very sorry to be out of town this weekend. I hope there's some other Seattlite on the list who can give a report of the show. I'd like to know if Mary Lou responds, or if she tastefully lets it go. There's also always the chance that she's old pals with Everett and they set this up together.... Hi fellow listers, I am not sure if posting re: this is proper list etiquette or not, but I'll give it a try... I am still basking in Mary Lou's live performance of a week ago, and I am hoping to get a few live performances on tape. I was wondering if any kind fans out there would be willing to help me out. I have no MLL to offer, but I have lots of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, and Natalie Merchant, plus some Ani DiFranco and REM. I am open to 2:1s as well. E-mail me if you're interested in trading... Thanks, Suzanne And is your place in heaven Worth giving up these kisses? Thanks for your message. It made good sense, and I am glad you stuck up for me. I am going to stick up for you and say that I wouldn't feel too bad about those girls--you are head and shoulders above them. Indeed, Judy should be saying to them, "how do you think I feel when I go out with Amber..." And as for Mom, she is a good Mom. I wouldn't trade her for Judy on any day of the year--except those couple of times when she compared me to those snooty Morello boys! I never knew you had similar feelings. Kind of funny that apparently we never had those feelings about Scott, Jamie, Jenny and Joel! And since Mom thinks the "Chip" thing was in innocent mistake and was actually a compliment, why don't you ask Judy when you see her in 10 years or so how her son Sam is doing, when she says "Sam?", say, "yes--Sam the businessman!" Wouldn't that actually be a nice compliment? What would Mom say to that blooper? How's your mouth? When is lunch? When do you go back? - ----------------- End Forwarded Message ----------------- I never was there was there when it counts I get my way you're so like me - --Tori, "Playboy Mommy" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Aug 98 14:03:00 -0400 From: scarter@law.harvard.edu Subject: Re: [MLL] Fwd: Re: it's Judy's party and we'll I apologize for this... that's what happens when you type in your address book recipients too quickly!
